February 2014 Newsletter

Note from the President- Another year has passed and now we must look forward.  EMHS has another year of programs and events already planned or in the planning stages.  A group trip to find more plants for your gardens (Arrowhead Alpines and Gee Farms), new speakers, new program topics, and new members gardens to see are just some of the things to look forward to this year.

As always we will begin the year with Jan Everson as our speaker and she will show a pictorial presentation of last year’s MHS Garden Tour and the 2013 Tailgate Party.  Jan’s programs are  always a great way to start the new season of Hosta growing by giving ideas of what you can look for to add to your own garden, ideas of what you can change to enhance your own gardens, or maybe persuading somebody to attend the current year’s Hosta functions by showing all the fun and educational they can be.

Mick and Cathy Hodgson have already unveiled the 2014 EMHS Hosta Stone at last year’s Christmas Party.  If you haven’t already ordered your stone featuring Hans Hansen’s H. “Joy Ride”, you should contact the Hodgson’s.  The public unveiling of this year’s stone will be at Hosta College on March 14th and 15th.  As always we need members to volunteer to help transport the stones to Piqua, OH.  If you are able to help with this project, please contact Mick and Cathy at 810-664-8985.

The following is an email sent to the EMHS Fund Raising Chairperson, Cathy Hodgson, regarding the volunteers that help transport stones to Hosta College.

-SNIP-  *Update  This issue has been resolved.  -Glen

We will discuss the above email from Kay Anderson at the February Meeting if any further clarification is needed.

You will find Hosta College information contained below in this newsletter.  If you have never attended Hosta College you are missing out on a chance to break up your winter doldrums with some exciting plants, educational opportunities, and talking with fellow Hosta enthusiast.

We as a Hosta Society need to thank Walter’s Gardens for donating plants of Hosta “Joy Ride” to EMHS as a fundraising effort.  These plants will be sold at Hosta College for $10.00 each.  I wish to thank Cathy Hodgson and Sally Suttle for their work on this project.

The EMHS T-shirts featuring Joseph Tychonievich’s Hosta Addiction saying are available by contacting Glen.  More information is contained below in this newsletter and on the blog.

I have printed business cards for EMHS.  I have made 100 of these so members can have something to give to people that show interest in joining our group.  Take a couple of these when at the meeting if you would like to have them for the reason mentioned.

Sincerely,
Glen

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on February 13th at 6:00 PM at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).
Our speaker for this meeting will be Jan Everson who will present the MHS Garden Tour and the 2013 Tailgate Party in an exciting pictorial format.  Jan makes a program every year after attending Hosta Society functions so that those not able to attend the functions and Garden Tours can still enjoy a mini tour of the events.  Be sure to bring a notepad as you will see pictures of plants that you want to find for your own garden.

“Indiana Bob” Balitewicz died January26, 2014. Bob was the hybridizer of Hosta “Krugerrand” featured on the EMHS 2013 Hosta Stone.  Anybody that attended Hosta College would know Bob from his being the auctioneer at the Hosta Auction on the first night of Hosta College.  He was a great friend and very active in MHS, the region and AHS.  He will be sadly missed.

Hosta Stones- The hybridizer for 2014 is Hans Hansen and the plant is Hosta “Joy Ride”.  H. “Joy Ride” was introduced by Walter’s Gardens.  It forms a wriggly, broadly mounding mass of very wavy blue-green leaves accented with upright folded edges, grows to 16 x 36, and has 24 inch scapes of widely flared, tubular, light lavender flowers produced in midsummer.  The official unveiling of the 2014 Hosta Stone will be at Hosta College in Piqua, OH on March 14th, 2014.

EMHS will also be selling the live plant of Hosta “Joy Ride” at Hosta College.  Walter’s Gardens donated the plants to EMHS in exchange for one of our Hosta Stones featuring this plant.  The plants will be sold for $10.00 each.
