April 2013 Newsletter


Note from the President- I got home from Hosta College yesterday afternoon.  EMHS unveiled the 2013 Hosta Stone to the public at Hosta College and sold all but 6 of the stones transported to Hosta College.  Cathy Hodgson will give a report of the Hosta Stone Sales at the April meeting.  We also have stones available from 2008, 2011, & 2012 for anyone interested in those stones. 

This month we will be seeking nominations for the Office of Vice President.  Please consider volunteering for this position.  The duties of the position are printed later in this newsletter.

The topic of this month’s meeting will be Cypripedium Orchids presented by me.  I truly enjoy teaching people that these natives are not as hard to grow as often thought.  Just like with Rhododendrons, the key is drainage. 
I want to send out a big thank-you to Jackie DiGiovanni of Michigan Gardening Magazine for including EMHS’s calendar of Events in the Magazine.  Jackie is including EMHS functions, Hybridizer Group meetings, and MHS functions as long as I have a date, place, and time to send before the deadline.

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on April 11th at 6:00 PM at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).  The doors will open at 5:00 PM. 
The topic for this meeting is Cypripedium Orchids.  This PowerPoint Presentation contains pictures of many Cypripedium species and hybrids.  You can grow Cypripediums in your garden, come find out how easy it can be.  Glen will show how to pot these orchids and how to sink the pot into your garden to grow these beauties easily. 

Seeking Nominations for Officer Position- We are seeking nominations for a new Vice-President.  Nominations will be accepted at the April meeting.

Please consider helping our organization by volunteering to be our new Vice-President.

The duties of the position are;
Vice President- Assumes the duties of President when the President is absent.  Co-signatory on EMHS checking account, helps set-up hall for meetings, sends thank you notes to speakers or hosts for current meeting. 
If you are interested in helping our club in this capacity you can call Glen, Mark, Marlene,  Mick and Cathy, or Barb to ask any questions you may have prior to the meeting.    

2013 Interlochen Bus Trip- June 27th, 2013
If you are planning to go on this bus tour please contact Carolyn at 989-871-2873 so she has an accurate accounting of those who will be prepaying the deposit.
Bus will leave Meijer parking lot in Birch Run at 8:00 AM (loading begins at 0730)
Stop at McDonald’s in Clare for bathroom break at 9:30 AM
Arrive in Interlochen at 11:30
Stop for lunch in Interlochen
Arrive at Interlochen Perennial Farm at 1:30 PM, tour, shop and reload bus to leave by 3:30 PM
Arrive at Cedar Hedge Gardens, tour, shop, reload bus in 1.5-2 hours.
Arrive back in Clio or Birch Run around 8:00 PM
The EMHS Board by majority vote has authorized the trip to be subsidized by the club so that each member attending will pay only $25.00 (non-refundable deposit) for the trip as long as at least 30 people reserve a spot on the bus by paying the deposit in advance.  Anybody that is not an EMHS Member can go on the bus trip by paying an additional $5.00 ($30.00 non-refundable deposit).

Review the February meeting minutes on the blog.  We will vote to accept the minutes at the next meeting.  
  
Hosta Stones- The hybridizer for 2013 is "Indiana Bob" Balitewicz and the Hosta is Krugerrand.  H. Krugerrand is a large, upright mound, thick bright gold foliage, large leaf 14 X 10 inches up to 171/2 X 131/2 inches, 17 vein pairs, ovate shape, moderately wavy. slightly corrugated, with pale lavender flowers.  The official unveiling of the 2013 Hosta Stone was at Hosta College in Piqua, OH on March 15th, 2013.

There are nine 2012 Hosta Stones featuring Ron Livingston’s H. “Alakazaam” left this year.  On hand are; 2 Brown, 1 Moss, and 3 Iron.  The price is $35.00 for each stone.  We also have two 2011 Stones featuring Van Wade’s H. “American Halo” and one 2008 Stone featuring Gil Jones’ H. “Joshua’s Banner”.  These stones are in natural color and are $30.00 each.  If interested in purchasing any of these stones please call Cathy Hodgson at 810-664-8985.

February 14, 2013 Meeting Minutes


The Meeting was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall on February 14, 2013.
The doors opened at 5:00 PM
Networking began at 6:00 PM
Refreshments were served at 6:30
The meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM by President Glen Pace.
Glen introduced Jan Everson. Jan Everson gave a presentation on the 2012 National Convention and Garden Tour, held in Nashville, Tennessee.
After a 15 minute break, the meeting was called back to order.
Approval of Minutes: there were no corrections to the December meeting minutes. Motion to accept was Don Mosher and it was seconded by Thomas Bass. The membership voted to accept the minutes.
Treasurer’s Report: Barb Hunter, treasurer, January’s monthly balance as of 1-31-2013 was $3554.52. Motion to accept was Don Mosher and it was seconded by Thomas Bass. The membership voted to accept the treasurer report.
Board decision was explained as to why we would not be donating to the Nematode Research.
Barb Hunter will be checking to see if we can use our current supply of blank name tags. Glen Pace will be supplying her a blank to take to Championship Trophies. Price may be reduced if able to use existing stock.
Hosta College is March 15-16 in Piqua, Ohio. Glen asked for help in transporting Hosta stones, please contact Cathy & Mick Hodgson if you are available to help.
501c3 forms were signed by Glen Pace and Barb Hunter, a check for $400.00 was sent along with the forms so Eastern Michigan Hosta Society will soon be a 501c3 nonprofit organization.
The Interlocken bus trip has now been opened to Saginaw Valley Hosta club. The trip will be on June 27th leaving the Birch Run Meijer parking lot at 8:00AM and will be returning approximately at 8:45PM. May 2nd is the deadline for signing up and paying if you intend to be going. Any questions please contact Carolyn Pickard.
Saginaw Valley Hosta Society has offered us to join them on June 22nd for the MI Hosta Garden Walk. Cost will be $41.00 or $32.00, dependent on number of participants. If interested please contact Glen Pace.
September meeting will be held at Mark and Becky Hanner’s home.
Barb Hunter did research on EMHS history of fundraising for the last 4 years: report was given at meeting.
Raffle :Leucothoe and Ginkgo Raffle drawing winners were: Ann Oprea and Gene Arms
Next meeting will be April 11, 2013 at Mayfield Twp. Hall
