September 2020 Newsletter

Note from the President- This Newsletter is going to be very brief and to the point as I have been extremely busy and forgot to get a newsletter written last week.

First, I want to thank Barb Hunter for hosting the August Garden Tour.   Barb’s gardens are such a beautiful place to visit that I am in hopes you all got the chance to visit during the tour.

Next, our September meeting is our Annual Plant Exchange and Garden Tour at the home of Sandy Vukonich.   Sandy has wonderful gardens to stroll through, a large pond with a fantastic waterfall to view, and enough space for us to follow the ongoing Covid-19 restrictions.  We are going to have the September Garden Tour and Annual Plant Exchange following the same premise as our last two meetings.  All attendees will have to wear a face mask while at the gardens, there will be no potluck, and please adhere to the social distancing guidelines.  Bottled water will be provided.

The success of the Plant Exchange depends on the quality and number of plants donated to the exchange.  High quality plants can be placed on the $5.00 table at the discretion of the donor of the plant.  Rules of the exchange are given below.  This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.

Lastly, there are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held as we have to go fast to get finished before dark.  Also, please do not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia (Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, Persicaria (Painter’s Palette), etc.  Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta, companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.   *Please put a name label in each plant you bring to the exchange (It is nice know what a plant is when you plant it in your garden).

We hope to see you at the September Garden Tour and Annual Plant Exchange at Sandy’s on September 10th.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

August 2020 Newsletter

Note from the President- Our July Garden Tour at Pace Gardens was visited by a lot of our members as well as some other people from other garden clubs including NARGS, HPS, and a couple of other garden groups.

Since we are still having to follow Covid-19 restrictions we are going to have the August Garden Tour following the same premise.  All attendees will have to wear a face mask while at the gardens, there will be no potluck, and please adhere to the social distancing guidelines.  Bottled water will be provided.

The Tour will be at Barb Hunter’s home.  Directions will be given below in the next meeting heading.  Barb will have plants for sale and her gardens contain an extremely large collection of Hosta as well as other plants.

We are still planning the Annual Plant Exchange although the venue had to be changed because of Covid-19.  Plans are to have the exchange at the home of Sandy Vukonich on September 10th, 2020.

The success of the Plant Exchange depends on the quality and number of plants donated to the exchange.  High quality plants can be placed on the $5.00 table at the discretion of the donor of the plant.  Rules of the exchange are given below.

There are only a few weeks before our Annual Plant Exchange which is on September 10th.  If you have not already potted the plants you are planning to bring to the exchange, I suggest you do it as soon as possible to give the plant some time to adjust to a pot.  This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.

There are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held as we have to go fast to get finished before dark.
The Plant Exchange drawing is decided by the number of meetings each membership has attended in the past year, starting with the Sept 2019 meeting and ending with the August 13, 2020 meeting.  The first set of names will be those that have attended all scheduled meetings since last year’s plant exchange.  Next will be those members that attended all but one of the scheduled meetings, and so on.  When your name is called you can choose a plant from the main group or you can choose a plant from the $5.00 table, give Cathy your name so she can keep track of your total, then pay Cathy at the end of the Exchange.
We hope to see you at the August Garden Tour at Barb’s on August 13th.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on August 13th, 2020 at Barb Hunter’s in Lapeer.   The address is 316 Davis Lake Road, Lapeer, MI 48446.   The phone number at Barb’s is 810-664-7531 if you need to call for additional directions.    Barb will be selling plants!
Directions:  Driving Directions- (from I-69/M-24) – Drive 3 miles north on M-24 to Davis Lake Road, turn left (West) to 4th house on right.

July 2020 Newsletter

Note from the President- This is the first newsletter and plans for a meeting for EMHS since our February meeting because all activities for EMHS were cancelled due to the COVID-19 World Pandemic.  For our first summer gathering we are going to have an open garden tour at Pace Gardens in Clio.  There will be no formal meeting and no potluck, just a few hours to see each other, tour the gardens, and catch up on what has been going on in our lives and gardens.  We will ask for a volunteer to host the August meeting during the tour at Pace Gardens.  I will provide bottled water for the July gathering/tour so we can minimize contact.  Remember we will not have food at this meeting, please plan accordingly.  There will be a surprise from the club for every member in good standing that attends this EMHS event.  Directions and times are provided below in the heading “next meeting”.

Cathy Hodgson and Gene Arms will be selling the remainder of the plants from the EMHS Annual Plant Sale at the July meeting.  If you did not preorder plants you may have an opportunity to buy them on July 9th.  For those few that did not pick-up your preorder from Cathy, she will have those orders at the meeting as well.

With the lack of rain (here at Pace Gardens we have had less than one half of an inch in over a month) we are stringing hoses to try to make up for Mother Nature’s lack of moisture for our plants.  Hopefully some of you were blessed with the rains that totally missed us.  The spring freezes were hard on the martagon lilies and most of them are dwarfed and not going to bloom.  Some of those that did emerge are already going dormant from the lack of water.   Even most of my Trilliums are going dormant and some of the Polygonatums are already gone for the year.   The Hosta are doing okay and most have totally recovered from the freeze damage they received in April.  I will be leaving the hoses strung out when you come on the 9th so you will have to watch your step.

Those of you that have visited Pace Gardens know that there are benches scattered throughout the gardens so there will be some seating, but if you want to stay for a while you may want to bring your own chair.

I ask that everybody please adhere to the social distancing recommendations set by the CDC.  I also ask that everybody wear a mask to protect me as well as all other attendees.   My father has stage four cancer and I am his primary caregiver so he is very susceptible to anything and everything as are some of the members of our group.

I look forward to seeing you all on July 9th for our first gathering since February.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
