EMHS December 2022 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
December 2022 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on December 8th, this is the Annual Christmas Party

Note from the President- First I want to apologize that I have not sat down to write the Newsletter and get it sent out.   We are having the Annual Christmas Party this year with our biggest potluck of the year.   The ham is already ordered so we have the one main dish, but it is up to all of you to bring your favorite dish to pass.   So, please reserve December 8th for the festivities.

Next, I want to thank Aaron Strouse for doing our first presentation since Covid started back in 2019.    Aaron is always a welcome face to our group and does a wonderful presentation every time he is our speaker.  I also want to thank the following people for hosting this year’s summer tours; Teresa Dillon, Michael Scherbovich, the Native Plant Nursery, Karen & Larry Erickson, Janis and Dennis Pardeik, Dawn and Gary Kendall, and Jim Slezinski.   As always, every garden we visit has something different to offer.   This year we got to see the spring garden plantings of a butterfly garden, a beautifully manicured garden with a fantastic array of miniature Hosta and other perennials, fantastic Daylily gardens with fields of daylily hybridizers results, woodland gardens, ponds in gardens and ones used for irrigation of the plants, and tropical gardens with numerous Musa (banana) varieties as well as some rare cannas and other unusual tropicals, and of course every garden had fantastic garden art.  If you have not gone to these summer tours you are really missing out on some unbelievable gardens and some of the kindest people you will ever meet that are so generous with their gardening knowledge and the techniques they use.

We already have some volunteers to host next year’s summer tours, but if you are interested in offering to host a tour of your own garden or know of a garden that you feel should not be missed, please let me know by email or at the December meeting.

We do not have any speakers scheduled yet for the 2023 calendar year.   If you know of somebody you would like to hear speak at EMHS, please let any of the Board members know.

The EMHS Board was not able to have their annual Board meeting in November due to illness, so we will be meeting at the township hall before the Christmas Party.   If you want to come early to decorate, please feel free to do so as we will be busy with our meeting in one corner of the hall.

I look forward to seeing everybody at our party.

Happy Holidays!
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- THE EMHS 2022 Christmas Party will be held on December 8th, 2022 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

The doors will open at 5:00 PM for decorating, Networking at 6:00 PM, Dinner at 6:30 PM, Business Meeting at 7:30 PM, and Gift Exchange at 7:45 PM.

This annual event is always a lot of fun and a great way to end the year for the club.  The Club will provide the meat (ham) and table set-ups.  We do ask that everybody bring a dish to pass as this is our biggest potluck of the year.

We will be doing the gift exchange as we have done in the past.  If you are interested in exchanging gifts, all you have to do is bring a wrapped non-gender-specific gift with a value of $10.  All the gifts will be laid at the back of the room and during the party we will call names from the sign-up sheet of the people who brought gifts.  When your name is called you go pick out a gift.  Nobody is required to bring a gift for the exchange, but if you do not bring one, please understand that you will not be able to place your name on the list to pick one out.  This is the only way to assure that all people who bring a gift will receive one.

Meeting Minutes

The Meeting – was held at Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer and it was our annual plant exchange.

Networking – 5:00 p.m., set up for potluck, sign in stroll through the gardens and look over plants brought for the exchange. Everyone enjoyed a wonderful meal.

Business Meeting – started at 6:10 p.m. called to order by President Glen Pace. Glen welcomed everyone. With a show of hands Glen ask how many people went on the garden tours over the summer, the response was very encouraging with the number of members that went and enjoyed the tours.  We had one new membership Ralph and Dee Simmons join tonight. Glen went over the rules for the exchange for those new members that had not been to one before. There was some discussion about a few plants that were brought, regarding them being poisonous, spreading, and a question of the name of the trees that were that were brought to the exchange. With the help of Pat Maitland using her app on her phone the trees were identified as European spindle.

Treasurer’s report – Barb Hunter, the treasurer, stated in January our ending balance was $8499.30 and to date the balance was $8964.69. She explained that we will be having some expenses coming out soon.

Club Plants – Cathy Hodgson stated we have some plants from 2021 and 2022 left. They will be for sale at tonight’s meeting. Along with plants from the $5.00 table for the plant exchange.

Calendar of Events – please note that there will not be an October or November meeting. The annual board meeting will be November 10th 12:00 p.m. at Whiteys in Davison. Our next meeting will be December 8th at the Mayfield Twp. Hall and it will be our annual Christmas Party.

Announcements –Former member, Jim Jessop has passed away.  Funeral arrangements were announced for those wishing to attend, and Glen Pace had also sent out a prior email.

The Hardy Plant Society meeting is Monday, September 12, at 7:00 p.m. at the Congregation Church in Birmingham the speaker is Dennis Groh, and he will be speaking on Asian Maple Musings.

Break – 10-minute break to look at plants.

Plant Exchange – the plant exchange was a huge success; everyone went home with some wonderful plants.

Adjourned – meeting was adjourned at 7:25 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Marlene Daniels

Secretary

EMHS September 2022 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
September 2022 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on September 8th, this is the Annual Plant Exchange

Note from the President- Our August tour to Jim Slezinski’s Lake Orion Abode was a surprise treat for those that had never visited his Gardens.   Huge banana trees and many tropical plants dominate the portion of the gardens near the house in the back yard.   Jim has a wonderful collection of rare and unusual conifers as well.   What a beautiful place!

This year has not been the perfect growing conditions for many of us with multiple weeks in a row of no rain.   I have had some tell me that this is the best season they have ever had with their Hosta and that their Hosta are larger this year than ever before.   It just depended on which rain cells hit which area to give some much-needed rain.   That being said, there is a Plant Exchange in two weeks that if you have not dug and potted anything to bring to the Exchange, you better do it ASAP.   The plants brought to the Exchange need to be settled into the pot for a while or you will be bringing a distressed plant.

The September meeting is the Annual Plant Exchange and remember, please, no Ostrich Fern, Houttuynia, Painter’s Pallet, Bishop’s Weed, or any other invasive plant.   The exchange is also not limited to plants.  Garden ornaments, garden tools, birdhouses, etc. are welcome.  Please bring something to put into the Exchange.

This year the Plant Exchange drawing will be drawn totally at random.    Every current paid membership gets one chance in each round of the Exchange.   You can pay your $5.00 annual dues before the drawing if you are not current or want to join the club.   We will also have the $5.00 table where special plants will be placed so when your name is drawn you can choose a plant from the open exchange or you can give $5.00 to Cathy and choose a plant from the $5.00 special plant area.   Once every membership has had a turn in the first round, we will start a second round drawn at random again.   This process continues until no plants are left.

Another thing to remember is that we ask each member to stay until the end of the exchange and take any plants they brought to the exchange that were not taken during the exchange.    At every Plant Exchange there are plants left that a few of us have to load into our own vehicles and dispose of them.

We will be having a potluck at 5:00 PM for those that want to participate.   For those that do not want to participate in a potluck you can arrive at 6:00 PM when we will start the Annual Meeting.   The meeting portion will include a Treasury update, Minutes from our last group meeting, and a time for any issues that members want to discuss.   The Plant Exchange will begin at 6:30 PM.

I look forward to seeing you at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer on September 8th.

Sincerely,

Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on September 8th, 2022 from 5:00 PM until the Pavilion is cleaned up after the Plant Exchange at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer.   The address is 1455 Suncrest Drive, Lapeer, MI 48446.   The Pavilion is at the back of the Suncrest Nursing Facility.   For any that have never been to the Display Garden at Suncrest, be sure to arrive early to tour the gardens.   The Potluck will begin at 5:00 PM for those that want to participate.   The Annual Meeting will begin at 6:00 PM.   We will start the Plant Exchange drawing at 6:30 PM.

EMHS August 2022 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
August 2022 Newsletter

Note from the President- We had another wonderful tour last month thanks to Karen & Larry Erickson, Janis & Dennis Pardeik, and Dawn & Gary Kendall.   All three gardens were beautiful and hopefully an inspiration to all that visited them.   Since all three gardens had daylilies we got to see some of the latest in the daylily hybridizer’s efforts to improve on the orange “ditch lilies” we all know from driving through the country roads.   The old orange ones have been turned into just about any color you can imagine except a true blue.   Thank you again to the owners of these spectacular gardens for sharing your time, your gardens, and for your GRACIOUS HOSPITALITY.

The August 11th tour will be in Lake Orion at the home of Jim Slezinski.   We will be going as a group to this garden because Jim has another group coming on the same day and will be entertaining all day long.   We will all meet at Jim’s house at 3:00 PM and leave no later than 5:00 PM.

The name of Jim’s gardens is The Lake Orion Abode.   He has been working on his gardens for 38 years and anyone who visits is going to be amazed at the gardens but especially about his tropical gardens.   Jim has added a pond with streams to the gardens and a look-out deck that overlooks the gardens.   A suggestion by Jim is that if you see a flower or plan t you want to ask about, take a picture with your phone so that you can show him the picture to ask about it.   This alleviates the constant walking around to answer your questions.   We will be parking in his neighbor’s yard BEHIND the white fence and walking over to Jim’s yard.   There is no room to park on the road so please follow the signs for parking.    The directions to Jim’s are below in this newsletter.

Carpooling is always suggested for the summer tours.   It saves on gas, parking space, and gives you time to discuss what you have just seen during your visit.   It is also suggested that you eat while on the road driving to the tour site and also stop to use the bathroom while driving as none of these sites have a public restroom.

Another treat for the tour day is that Barb Hunter is opening her gardens for visitors and sales from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM then again after the tour at Jim’s for those that want to gather for a party.   Barb will collect money to order pizza.   Bring your lawn chair and your favorite beverage and spend time sitting around and talking.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tour at Jim’s and afterwards at Barb’s.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Will be a Garden Tour on August 11th, 2022 in Lake Orion at the home of Jim Slezinski, 699 Pine Tree Rd, Lake Orion, MI 48362.  Ph. 248-521-5829.  Look for the BIG FLOWER at the black mailbox and follow the signs for parking.
Directions: From M-24 in Lapeer, drive south on M-24 through Oxford about 19 miles to Indianwood Rd.  (Traffic light with Krogers on the left-hand side).   Turn Right onto Indianwood Rd. and drive about 2 miles to the 4-way Stop.   Turn Left onto Joslyn Rd. and drive about 1 mile to the 3-way Stop.   Turn Left onto Heights Rd. And drive about 1 mile to the 4-way Stop (Pine Tree School is on the Left).  Turn Right onto Pine Tree Rd. to the sixth house on the Left with the BIG FLOWER at the black mailbox.   Pull into the driveway with the signage to direct you to parking at the neighboring lawn on the right.     It is just a short walk back to Jim’s where we will meet at the garage at 3:00 PM.   We will leave no later than 5:00 PM.

Don’t forget to bring your own bottle of water and use the bathroom on the way there.

 Eastern Michigan Hosta Society

July 2022 Newsletter

Note from the President- A big thank-you goes out to Teresa Dillon and Mike Scherbovich for opening their gardens on June 9th and hosting our first garden tour of 2022.   I also want to thank Angela Nelson of East Michigan Native Nursery for opening her nursery to us so we could buy plants from her.

Teresa’s garden was spectacular with a large variety of plantings.   The Hosta and companion plants were beautiful and the mini Hosta bed had some of the best grown minis I had ever seen.   Too bad the Martagons weren’t blooming yet.   Once her Daylilies start blooming her yard will be filled with flowers.

I fully intend to go back to Mike Scherbovich’s garden in mid-summer to take pictures of a blooming butterfly garden and share them on the EMHS blog.   Visiting his gardens in June one cannot see the impact of this type of gardening, but once you see it all in flower and the number of butterflies it attracts it will amaze you.

The July 14th tour will be in Clio and Flushing at the homes of Karen and Larry Erickson, Janis and Dennis Pardeik, and Dawn and Gary Kendall.   All three of these gardens will be filled with Daylilies and should be in peak bloom at the time of our tour.   Karen and Janis are avid Daylily hybridizers so you will most likely get to see flowers that have not even been registered with the Daylily Society.   All three gardens will also have Hosta and interesting plants as well as some unique yard art.

At the Erickson’s please pull to the back yard and the parking area will be marked.   At the Pardeik’s pull to the top of the driveway and walk back down to the gardens near the pond and the woodland garden on the south side of the driveway.   At Dawn Kendall’s pull up the driveway to park.

Carpooling is always suggested for the summer tours.   It saves on gas, parking space, and gives you friends with which to discuss what you have just seen at your last stop.   It is also suggested that you eat while on the road driving to the tour sites and also stop to use the bathroom while driving as none of these sites have a public restroom.

Our August 11th tour will be of Jim Slezinski’s gardens in Lake Orion.  Jim has tropical gardens that will make you wonder how he can grow these plants in Michigan.   He also has a pond with multiple waterfalls and streams.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tour in Clio & Flushing on July 14th from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Will be a Garden Tour on July 14th, 2022 in Clio and Flushing at the homes of Karen and Larry Erickson, Janis and Dennis Pardeik, and Dawn Kendall.   The self-guided tour will begin at 3 PM and end at 7 PM.  I am writing directions to go from the site furthest East to the site furthest West.
