April 2016 Newsletter

Note from the President-   This year at Hosta College I took a couple classes, taught a couple classes, and sold plants in the vending area for Soule’s Garden.  Then, after Hosta College closed we had a blast sitting and talking in the Hotel Conference Room.   Anybody that has not gone to one of these after-college get-togethers is really missing out.  You learn a lot, meet new friends, visit with your old acquaintances, eat and drink.  Then you get to go to bed for a few hours and get back up to go back to Hosta College.  We had a great time and hope to see you at Hosta College next year. 

                I have already turned in the order for this year’s EMHS Annual Plant Sale, but if you missed out on ordering I will accept your order via an email to me at PaceGardens@charter.net or at the April 14^th meeting.  The plants will be delivered at the May 12^th meeting.  If you still need to pay for your order please make out a check to EMHS and give or send it to Barb Hunter, EMHS Treasurer. 

                Our speaker for the April 14^th meeting is Julia Hofley.  Julia is a freelance writer for gardening magazines, a speaker for gardening audiences, a member of multiple gardening societies, and a plant collector.  For our meeting Julia will present Building a Collector’s Garden. 

                We will have our usual potluck at the meeting.  As always the club will provide the flatware, plates, and napkins. 

                Come prepared to have a great time, see a great presentation, and have some friendly conversation.

Next Meeting- April 14, 2016 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery). 

            The speaker will be Julia Hofley.  Julia’s presentation is Building a Collector’s Garden.  This is Julia’s description of the presentation.
            We didn’t start out to be collectors but as we began to garden together, we found which plants actually won our hearts and square footage in the garden beds and borders. Take a look at our many collections of conifers, Lilium, Chrysanthemums, groundcovers, ferns, fragrant plants and more. Learn why we fell in love with these plants and how they create waves of color and interest throughout the seasons.

The doors will open at 5:00 PM for Networking, Potluck Dinner at 6:00 PM, Presentation at 7:00 PM, Break at 8:00 PM, and Business Meeting at 8:15 PM.

Review the February 11, 2016 Meeting Minutes on the blog.  We will vote to accept the minutes at the April 14, 2016 meeting.

EMHS Annual Plant Sale- The order for the plant sale has been turned in.  If anybody missed out on ordering I will accept prepaid orders at the April 14^th meeting.  If anybody that ordered plants has not yet paid for their order, please remit your payment to the EMHS Treasurer, Barb Hunter, 316 Davis Lake Rd.  Lapeer, MI 48446
            The plants will be delivered at the May 12^th, 2016 meeting.  If you ordered plants and are unable to attend the meeting, please make arrangements with another member to pick up your order or you can call Glen at 989-244-4029 to make prior arrangements. 

Consider Hosting an EMHS Meeting- above you see the EMHS 2016 calendar of events with a number of openings for meeting places.  We ask that you consider hosting a summer garden meeting at your garden.  Sharing our gardens is a way for all of us to learn; we get ideas for new plantings, insect control, garden art, and learn how other gardeners express themselves through their gardens.  We all have something to share, please share your knowledge with the rest of us.

Name Badges- If you need one of the new EMHS name badges, please put your printed name on the sign-up sheet at any meeting or you can email Glen with your request.  Glen will try to have your name badge at the next meeting.

The proceeds from the sale of this shirt go to promote our “Purpose” which is, to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.
