July 2019 Newsletter
Note
from the President- Our weather went from cool wet early spring to
hot summer. Welcome to typical
Mid-Michigan. It was great that we
didn’t have the late spring frosts that burn the newly emerging plants and then
the cool damp spring made our Hosta clumps grow larger than normal and the
gardens look fuller than in previous years.
What a fantastic early part of the growing season for one of our
favorite plants.
Congratulations to at least one of our members, Bev Wolf for receiving
multiple blue ribbons as well as some red ones at the MHS Leaf Show last
month. If any of our other members won
any ribbons, please let us know.
We want to thank John and Annette Gavit for hosting our June
meeting. They have a wonderful
collection of Hosta and other plants that combine to make for a beautiful
garden. Despite the rain of the day, we
had a wonderful meeting and thoroughly enjoyed visiting the garden of another
EMHS member.
Since our gardens are flourishing from the boost from Mother Nature,
it is a great time to start thinking about what plants you can divide for our
EMHS Annual Plant Exchange in September.
The longer the divisions have to acclimate to a pot, the better they are
going to look for the plant exchange.
This year’s Exchange will be held at the Sun Crest Pavilion in
Lapeer.
Below in the next meeting heading you will find a note from Rob and
Susie Trott about the July meeting being held at their home in
Columbiaville. You will not need
to bring your own chair to this meeting.
But, please remember a dish to pass for the potluck and anything you
would like to donate as a door prize or to the raffle.
We look forward to seeing you at the next meeting on July 11th,
2019 at the Trott’s in Columbiaville at 5:00 PM for networking.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
Next Meeting- Is at Rob and Susie
Trott’s. 425 White Road, Columbiaville, MI 48421. Any questions you can call 810-516-0440. Glen Pace
EMHS President
This
is a note I received from Rob and Susie.
Just
a couple of things to add to the notes for our July
meeting at the Trott's. As previously mentioned you won't need to bring chairs
as we will have a big tent with room for 50 people. Also have picnic tables and
seats for another 20 or more. Also will have porta potty. When you pull in the
drive on the right hand side there will be two red gates open. That's where the
tent will be set up. After parking which will be on the grass on either side of
the driveway starting right after the gate, come back and through the gate. The
tables will be sit under the tent and three tables for food. We have gardens
front and back along with 4 ponds including our 1 acre pond with over 100 big
koi. All toll in the two ponds out back there are 300 koi. With the tent we are
good for the meeting rain or shine. Susie and I are looking forward to seeing
you. Now if the rain will only stop so we can finish up our gardens. Regards,
Rob & SusieDirections- From the Mayfield Township Hall turn right and go to M-24 North. Turn right and go 6 miles North on M-24 to White Road. Turn right on White Rd. and go about 3/4 mile to the house on the left. There is a Brittany crossing sign on the post with the address.
Please remember to bring your favorite dish to
pass for the potluck and plan to
have a great time.

June 2019 Newsletter
Note
from the President- At our May 9th meeting we had four
new memberships join EMHS. Please
welcome Barb Johnson, Terry Kamensky, Connie Miller, and Bev & Dave Wolf to
our group of Hosta and shade garden enthusiasts.
I have updated the EMHS Directory which will be emailed out to each of
you with an email address on file. If
you receive your EMHS Newsletter by USPS you will not be mailed a directory. Those of you without email that wish to
receive a copy of the directory can contact me and I will make a copy for you
that can be picked up at the next meeting.
The June meeting begins our summer garden tour meetings. For these meetings please remember to bring your
own chair to sit in, bug spray, and a dish to pass for the potluck. The garden tour meetings give us all a
chance to see our fellow member’s gardens, get ideas for our own gardens, and
another chance to talk plants with our fellow enthusiasts. The June meeting is at John & Annette
Gavit’s home in Saginaw. The Gavit
Garden has a very large number of Hosta varieties planted throughout the entire
property and some unusual decorative accents.
You will not be disappointed by your visit to this garden.
At the June meeting, John Gavit is going to give us fliers for the MHS
Garden Walk that is being held in the Saginaw area and hosted by the Saginaw
Valley Hosta Society on June 29th, 2019. You can give the info to any interested
person as this event is open to the public.
Below in the newsletter you will find a list of dates of AHS and MHS
Hosta Events in addition to the EMHS Calendar of Events. These are listed so you can plan your summer
fun with Hosta friends.
This is the time of year that our gardens are changing daily. Take the time to look at your garden not
just work in it. This is also a great
time to divide plants as we are getting consistent rains and the weather is not
so hot that the plants are wilting on a daily basis. Remember we have our Annual Plant Exchange
in September and making plant divisions this early in the season will produce
plants that have time to bulk-up before the exchange.
I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on June 13th at
the Gavit’s home in Saginaw.
Sincerely,Glen Pace
