September 2023 Newsletter

Annual Plant Exchange September 14, 2023

Note from the President- I want to thank the following people for opening their gardens for our summer tours this year; Rick & Nancy Stout in Oxford, Piechnik’s Garden Gate in Oakland Charter Twp., Jim Pabst in Fenton, Paul Laidler and Bonnie Vander-Muellen in Fenton, Carolyn Koning in Davison, Carrie & Kelly Williams in Davison, and Tina Metzger in Davison.  For their generosity each household will receive one year membership for free.   I have updated the Directory to reflect this.

Our Annual Plant Exchange is September 14th at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer.  We will start earlier than normal because of the shortening of daylight hours.  The Potluck will start at 5:00 PM.  The Annual Meeting will begin at 5:00 PM and the Plant Exchange will begin at 6:30 PM so we can be finished and have the pavilion cleaned up before dark.

The September meeting is the Annual Plant Exchange and remember, please, no Ostrich Fern, Houttuynia, Painter’s Pallet, Bishop’s Weed, or any other invasive plant.   The exchange is not limited to plants;  Garden ornaments, garden tools, birdhouses, etc. are welcome.  Please bring something to put into the Exchange.

This year the Plant Exchange drawing will be drawn totally at random.    Every current paid membership gets one chance in each round of the Exchange.   You can pay your $5.00 annual dues before the drawing if you are not current or want to join the club.   We will also have the $5.00 table where special plants will be placed so when your name is drawn you can choose a plant from the open exchange or you can give $5.00 to Cathy and choose a plant from the $5.00 special plant area.   Once every membership has had a turn in the first round, we will start a second round drawn at random again.   This process continues until no plants are left.

Another thing to remember is that we ask each member to stay until the end of the exchange and take any plants they brought to the exchange that were not taken during the exchange.    At every Plant Exchange there are plants left that a few of us have to load into our own vehicles and dispose of them.

We will be having a potluck at 5:00 PM for those that want to participate.   For those that do not want to participate in a potluck you can arrive at 6:00 PM when we will start the Annual Meeting.   The meeting portion will include a Treasury update, Minutes from our last group meeting, and a time for any issues that members want to discuss.   The Plant Exchange will begin at 6:30 PM.

I look forward to seeing you at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer on September 14th.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on September 14th, 2023 from 5:00 PM until the Pavilion is cleaned up after the Plant Exchange at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer.   The address is 1455 Suncrest Drive, Lapeer, MI 48446.   The Pavilion is at the back of the Suncrest Nursing Facility.   For any that have never been to the Display Garden at Suncrest, be sure to arrive early to tour the gardens.   The Potluck will begin at 5:00 PM for those that want to participate.   The Annual Meeting will begin at 6:00 PM.   We will start the Plant Exchange drawing at 6:30 PM.

EMHS June 2023 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
June 2023 Newsletter

Next tour is on Thursday June 8th, 2023

Note from the President- Spring is here and instead of a spring like we would like with moderate daytime temps and cool nights, we are getting hot daytime temps and moderate nights and there has been no rain in weeks with none forecasted for the next ten days.   The drought is rough on plants that are coming out of dormancy and trying to push heavy amounts of new growth.   Thank goodness I have an outdoor well to keep things from succumbing to the drought.

I am trying something new this year to help conserve ground moisture.   While at the Primrose Society meeting last month, one of the presenters said to leave the fallen leaves in place in the gardens.   I have always vacuumed up the leaves with my WORX vacuum/blower/shredder then spread them back onto the gardens.   The differences in the two being that the shredded leaves look much better and the plants get through the shredded leaves easier than whole leaves.  But, leaving the leaves whole saves a lot of work and time.

June starts our summer garden tour season.   For June we will visit the garden of Rick and Nancy Stout in Oxford.   I have also spoken to Stan and Matt at the Rochester store of Piechnik’s Greenhouse and have set up for us to visit their location.    For those that have only ever been to the Clio location of Piechnik’s, you are in for a treat.   The Rochester location has so much more than the Clio store both in plant offerings and hard goods.   Sandy Vukonich has suggested a couple other places to stop so I will add those to the directions below.   The tour hours are 3:00 PM-7:00 PM.   You are free to start and finish at either end of the tour.

Carolyn Pickard is working on a trip to Dow Gardens and Dahlia Hill (both in Midland) and I will group email the info to the membership as soon as I receive it from Carolyn.   The date Carolyn has chosen for the trip is Saturday September 9th.   If you are interested in this trip, please use your phone and message Carolyn at 1-989-326-5946.  She needs to get a count as to how many people want to attend this as well as whether you want to carpool to Midland or want to pay for a bus to drive.   This will be the Saturday before our September Plant Exchange on September 14th.

Our July tour will be in Fenton and Linden and the August tour will be in Davison.

We look forward to seeing you on June 8th!
Glen Pace
Sincerely,
EMHS President

Next Meeting- (tour times 3PM-7PM) is the beginning of our summer garden tours.   No membership meetings will be held during the summer months.  For June we will be visiting the garden of Rick and Nancy Stout in Oxford and a few places that Sandy Vukonich has suggested on the way to Piechnik’s Greenhouse in Rochester.  Directions from downtown Lapeer are below.
     (Sandy’s suggestions)-
         Bailey’s Ice Cream-
3546 S. Lapeer Rd-
South on M-24, 6.8 miles with destination on right.
The Farm Girl- Fruit and Veggie stand with small selection of plants-
South on M-24, 1.1 miles to destination on left.
Rick and Nancy Stout- 5855 Ludwig Rd., Oxford, MI 48371
South on M-24, 3.3 miles to Ludwig Rd.   Turn right (West).  2/10ths of a mile to destination on left.
         or  {From M-24 Downtown Lapeer- South on M-24 approximately 11 miles to Ludwig Rd.   Turn right (West).  Drive 2/10ths of a mile to the destination on your left.}
Piechnik’s Greenhouse- 1095 Rochester Rd., Oakland Charter Twp., MI 48363
North on Ludwig Rd. 0.2 miles to M-24.  Turn right (South) and drive 5.1 miles to Burdick St.  Turn left (east) and drive 0.3 miles (turns into Lakeville Rd).  Continue onto Lakeville Rd. and drive 5.8 miles to Rochester Rd.  Turn right (South) and drive 3.4 miles to the destination on the left.

EMHS May 2023 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
May 2023 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on May 11th, 2023

Note from the President- Our April meeting hands-on Grafting Session was a big success and I want to thank all the people that helped with the set-up and with grafting kit dispersal as well as those that stayed after the meeting to help clean up.   Since there are so many, I will not name you all individually, but please know that I greatly appreciate each and every one of you for your going above and beyond to make the meeting the success it was.

Those that participated in the grafting should start looking at the scion for signs of growth.   I had a member email me yesterday and send a picture because their scion is pushing growth which is an indicator that the graft is taking.

The May meeting is going to be a Potluck and Brainstorming meeting.   We will be asking you, the membership what you want the club to be, do, and what programs and/or speakers you would like to suggest the club try to obtain for future meetings.   Our indoor meetings are when the speakers are scheduled so we have computer program capabilities.

We will be starting the summer garden tours next month.   These tours are open to our membership as well as the public, so feel free to bring a friend with you as you tour the gardens.   By opening our tours to the public, we are fulfilling our club’s Purpose: to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.

Extending the invitation for the grafting class caused EMHS to gain four new members.   Please welcome, Cheryl & Ed Borkowski, Joanne Gensel, Rodney Laurin, and Sue Matlock.

We will have a raffle of plants donated to EMHS at the May meeting.   If you have a plant or garden item to donate to the raffle, just bring it to the meeting and we will place them on a table at the front of the room.   Tickets will be sold before the meeting and during the break and the drawing will be held before we are dismissed.

Please check the directory attached for accuracy of your own information.

We look forward to seeing you on May 11th!
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- will be held on May 11th, 2023 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

Subject: General Meeting.   Brainstorming and discussion of topics for indoor meetings.
