EMHS July 2021 Newsletter
Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
July 2021 Newsletter
Next Meeting is on July 8th, 3PM-7PM
Note from the President- This Newsletter will be a short one, but I will try to make sure I
include all of the up-to-date information.
We are trying something new with our summer tour this month; we are going to have two gardens to tour. If this event is a success, we will continue to do it for future summer garden tour gatherings. Our hosts this month will be Joyce Farrow in Otisville and Sandy Vukonich in Oxford. Since this event was not originally planned this way, these two gardens are a distance apart, but Joyce Farrow’s Garden is one that we have never toured before. We are hoping to get new gardens to tour and there is less hassle for the garden owners since tables are not needed for a potluck. Gardens located in the same area would be best for this new idea. Please let me know if you are interested in letting us visit your garden.
We will not be having a potluck, but cold bottled water will be offered at each of the gardens.
Since Covid we have not had a true business meeting. If any member wants to see the Books for the Club, please see Barb Hunter or myself. We are not charging dues for the Club again this year because we are not having speakers or indoor meetings. For those that were paid ahead, your dues will be extended to reflect such.
The August tour is being hosted by Elin Bastianelli in Highland on August 12, 2021.
We are hoping that EMHS will be able to have the September Plant Exchange Meeting at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer. This decision will be made at a later date and is dependent on the opening of the pavilion for social gatherings. The Pavillion is open to the public for gatherings, but they are not taking reservations at this time.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

June 2021 Newsletter
Note from the President- The current MIOSHA Guidelines for outdoor gatherings as of June 1,
2021 are that there are no capacity limits for gatherings of vaccinated people. Non-vaccinated persons must still wear a
mask and observe social distancing guidelines.
The CDC recommendations as well as mandated restrictions are being
relaxed so EMHS is going to start doing summer garden tours. These tours will be open to anybody wishing
to attend whether they are an EMHS Member or not. We will not be having a “meeting” at the
tours so attendees are welcome to arrive and leave as they wish. Although EMHS is known for its potluck
meals, there will be no food at the tours, but bottled water will be available. The gardens will be open rain or shine and
if rain is forecasted for any of the dates, please bring your umbrella with
you.
Our first garden tour of 2021 will be at Barb Hunter’s in Lapeer on June 10th, 2021. Remember that Barb sells plants so be sure to bring money because you will surely find something you will want to purchase. Barb sells Hosta, Koi, Water Plants, tropical plants, and various garden plants.
The August tour is being hosted by Elin Bastianelli in Highland on August 12, 2021. Elin has been working on her woodland garden and stream for only a couple of years, but her pictures are beautiful. This will be our first visit to the Bastianelli garden and I am looking forward to what I can learn from Elin.
We are hoping that EMHS will be able to have the September Plant Exchange Meeting at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer. This decision will be made at a later date and is dependent on the opening of the pavilion for social gatherings.
The biggest news is that we get to see each other again! I look forward to seeing our members and friends at a beautiful garden where we also get to feed our plant addiction with a large selection of plant for sale
Sincerely,
Glen Pace

American Hosta Society Convention 2021
Attention EMHS Members and Friends,
I have seen a few comments on Facebook regarding the Convention so when I received the information directly from AHS, I decided to share it with all of you so you could make plans for July 15th through 17th.
EMHS will have meetings scheduled by the EMHS Board once it is deemed safe by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. You can always go to the EMHS blog at http://easternmichiganhostasociety.blogspot.com/ for all current information regarding EMHS.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President
Hello Hosta Friend,
We have a combination of disappointing and exciting news to share. As you know, the pandemic continues to take its toll. Even with the good news of a vaccine rollout, top medical experts continue to recommend limited gatherings, social distancing, masks, and other precautions for the foreseeable future, suggesting that most Americans will not be vaccinated until late summer and that life may not begin to return to a semblance of “normal” until fall of 2021.
While we’re incredibly disappointed that we won’t be able to enjoy the
fellowship of friends and other hosta lovers in person, it creates a wonderful
opportunity to put on the first-ever virtual AHS convention! The team in
Kalamazoo is planning an exciting, action-packed virtual event!
What will participants receive access to?
- One convention gift Hosta ‘Silly String’ (mailed to
you)
- Speakers, workshops, Q&A, awards shows, and judges
clinics via Zoom
- On-demand, professionally recorded virtual garden tours
- Participating vendors
- Hosta leaf show photo contest (unsanctioned)
- Seedling photo competition
- And more!
Mark
your calendar for July 15–17! The new date allows convention planners to record
and produce video of the featured garden
tours at their peak. The cost to participate in the 2021 virtual convention
will be $49 per household.
Please join me in thanking the Kalamazoo convention team for their hard work through a difficult time and for their creativity in planning a meaningful experience virtually. They’re excited to present a one-of-a-kind event for you!
We’ll send out an update with details and registration information to be
released on the forthcoming convention website in the next few weeks!
In the meantime, stay safe and stay well.
For the Love of Hostas and Hosta Friends,
Tammy Borden
AHS Executive V.P.

September 2020 Newsletter
Note from the President- This Newsletter is going to be very brief and to the point as I have been extremely busy and forgot to get a newsletter written last week.
First, I want to thank Barb Hunter for hosting the August Garden Tour. Barb’s gardens are such a beautiful place to visit that I am in hopes you all got the chance to visit during the tour.

High quality plants can be placed on the $5.00 table at the discretion of the donor of the plant. Rules of the exchange are given below. This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.
We hope to see you at the September Garden Tour and Annual
