 Eastern Michigan Hosta Society

July 2022 Newsletter

Note from the President- A big thank-you goes out to Teresa Dillon and Mike Scherbovich for opening their gardens on June 9th and hosting our first garden tour of 2022.   I also want to thank Angela Nelson of East Michigan Native Nursery for opening her nursery to us so we could buy plants from her.

Teresa’s garden was spectacular with a large variety of plantings.   The Hosta and companion plants were beautiful and the mini Hosta bed had some of the best grown minis I had ever seen.   Too bad the Martagons weren’t blooming yet.   Once her Daylilies start blooming her yard will be filled with flowers.

I fully intend to go back to Mike Scherbovich’s garden in mid-summer to take pictures of a blooming butterfly garden and share them on the EMHS blog.   Visiting his gardens in June one cannot see the impact of this type of gardening, but once you see it all in flower and the number of butterflies it attracts it will amaze you.

The July 14th tour will be in Clio and Flushing at the homes of Karen and Larry Erickson, Janis and Dennis Pardeik, and Dawn and Gary Kendall.   All three of these gardens will be filled with Daylilies and should be in peak bloom at the time of our tour.   Karen and Janis are avid Daylily hybridizers so you will most likely get to see flowers that have not even been registered with the Daylily Society.   All three gardens will also have Hosta and interesting plants as well as some unique yard art.

At the Erickson’s please pull to the back yard and the parking area will be marked.   At the Pardeik’s pull to the top of the driveway and walk back down to the gardens near the pond and the woodland garden on the south side of the driveway.   At Dawn Kendall’s pull up the driveway to park.

Carpooling is always suggested for the summer tours.   It saves on gas, parking space, and gives you friends with which to discuss what you have just seen at your last stop.   It is also suggested that you eat while on the road driving to the tour sites and also stop to use the bathroom while driving as none of these sites have a public restroom.

Our August 11th tour will be of Jim Slezinski’s gardens in Lake Orion.  Jim has tropical gardens that will make you wonder how he can grow these plants in Michigan.   He also has a pond with multiple waterfalls and streams.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tour in Clio & Flushing on July 14th from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

EMHS June 2022 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
June 2022 Newsletter

Note from the President- Our last meeting of a potluck and reacquaintance meeting was a great time for all of us to catch-up on the last two years of each other’s lives.   Getting to sit and talk with members that we have not seen for two years was good for the soul.

Something to think about is the possibility of making at least one of our indoor meetings in the spring a “get-reacquainted” meeting where we will do just as we did for the May meeting last month, a potluck and not have a speaker.   Our February meeting requires a speaker to drive in February Michigan weather usually from a distant county.   This would give us a chance to discuss the year’s events and plan for the rest of the year without taking time for a speaker.    You can email me your thoughts on this subject and I will compile the comments for the EMHS Board to discuss at the November Board meeting.

Those members that owe membership dues for 2022 will have the date listed in red in the directory.   Dues are still only $5 per year/per household and can be paid at any meeting or you can send your dues to Barb Hunter, the EMHS Treasurer at her address listed in the directory.

Our June event is a Garden Tour on June 9th, 2022 in the Durand area.  The Tour sites are at the homes of Teresa Dillon, Mike Scherbovich, and Angela Nelson’s business, East Michigan Native Plants.   Bring cash with you for the East Michigan Native Plants site as Angela will be selling plants.   The time frame for the tour is 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM.   Please adhere to this time frame to be courteous to the owners.   Car pooling is suggested to alleviate parking issues.   All EMHS Members, Friends, and any Guests are welcome to attend the tour.   Below you will find the Directions to the tour sites.   Please remember to use the restroom on your way to the tour sites as there are not public restrooms at these owner’s homes.   As per the EMHS Board decision last year, there will be no meeting or potluck at the summer tours.   Bottled water will be provided by the owners of the two garden sites, but it is suggested that you have your favorite soft drink in the care with you since our summer garden tours are usually a bit of a drive for most and in the heat of summer.   Dehydration can make you feel weak, tired, and can be deadly if your electrolytes are affected severely.   Keep in mind what lack of water does to your favorite plants in your garden, then apply that thought to your own health.

Michigan Hosta Society will be having their annual Plant Sale and Leaf Show at Hidden Lake Gardens on June 18th.   I am attaching the MHS Flier to this Newsletter email so you can have all the information about the sale and leaf show.

I look forward to seeing you at the Tour in Durand on June 9th from 3:00 PM until 7:00 PM.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

April 2022 Newsletter

Note from the President- The EMHS Membership has voted to have our first in-person meeting since COVID started.   So, on April 14th, 2022 we will have a Mandatory Mask, No Potluck Meeting at the Mayfield Township Hall in Lapeer.   Our speaker will be Aaron Strouse who will present “Isle Royale, My Journey”.   Aaron has done multiple presentations for EMHS including Michigan’s Native Orchids, Michigan Native Wildflowers, and Michigan’s Waterfalls.   He is a fantastic speaker and an excellent photographer that always brings photos from his presentation to sell while he is at our meeting.   What a way to celebrate our first meeting, we get to see one of our own state’s treasures through Aaron’s camera lens.

This being our first in-person sit down meeting, I know the membership is going to need time to visit before the meeting starts.   Therefore, we will open the doors at 5:00 PM for networking and the presentation will begin promptly at 6:00 PM.

Wearing a mask is mandatory for this first meeting.   The EMHS Board will monitor the adherence to this mask mandate and ask any who do not follow the rule to leave the meeting.

We will discuss the May meeting plans at the April meeting, but my current plan for the May meeting is to have no speaker, reintroduce our potluck as we always knew it, and to do no more than to enjoy seeing each other without masks, with our legendary potluck, and catch up on each other’s lives over the past two years.   This is of course pending on that there is not another surge in the COVID virus cases.

The rest of the meetings for 2022 have also been planned with only the June meeting not quite finalized.   For the summer we will be touring gardens of both EMHS members and EMHS friends.  You can plan on seeing gardens that we have never visited before and all of them are going to be a treat.   The year’s plans will be presented at the April meeting.

Since we had no meetings in 2020 or 2021 the Membership dues were waived for these two years per a vote of the EMHS Board.   Marlene and I have gone through the membership records and have updated the Membership directory membership dates.   Please review the directory and check your status.   If the year is in red next to your name, you need to pay dues.   Such as, if you see 2021, it means that the last dues you paid were in 2019 and because we gave you credit for 2020 and 2021 your dues need to be paid for 2022.   Dues are still only $5.00 per household per year.

I am really looking forward to seeing all of you again and hope to see you at the April 14th meeting.

 Sincerely,

Glen Pace
EMHS President

This meeting is a mandatory mask, in-person, no potluck meeting

Our speaker will be Aaron Strouse who will present “Isle Royale, My Journey”.

September 2021 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on September 9th, this is the Annual Plant Exchange

Note from the President- Last meeting we had a tour of three member’s gardens that we had never toured before.   A huge thank you goes out to Paul Laidler, Ken & Jan Zawisa, and Elin & Bob Bastianelli for sharing their wonderful gardens with us.   Paul has a fantastic collection of Hosta with one that Barb and I think he needs to get into tissue culture and a stone wall that he built himself over a ten-year period that is a sight to behold!    Ken and Jan Zawisa have a garden that is built on a hill and the gardens surround the house.   The storm that hit us the night before the tour brought down trees in their yard and took out their power, but they still shared their beautiful gardens with those of us that dared to tread the flooded roads.   Best Wishes for them to get the stairway to the deck replaced after the tree took it out.   Elin’s shade garden is built at the back of the property in the edge of the woods.  She has many plants that came from the woods she is gardening in.   The mini deer ferns she has planted along certain pathways are adorable and came from the parts of the woods she has cleared for the gardens.   Her husband Bob keeps one of the most immaculate lawns I have ever seen.  All three properties were fantastic places to visit and see just what others do to suit their own taste in shade gardening.

The EMHS Board had an email meeting after the July Tour.   The Board voted unanimously to:

1.      No longer have Potlucks for the summer garden tour meetings.

2.      Not have the Potluck for the September Plant Exchange.

3.      Continue the summer meetings as garden tours with at least two gardens in the same geographical area each month.

4.      Not have a business meeting at any tour meeting.

5.      Continue to monitor the CDC Guidelines in hopes of having the Christmas Party

We will discuss the thought processes of the Board decisions at the September Plant Exchange.   The pavilion at Suncrest in Lapeer has been secured for the September meeting.  We will also have the business portion of the meeting before the Plant Exchange begins.  For the Plant Exchange meeting we will have bottled water, Iced Tea, and if members want to bring cookies, they are welcome to do so.   We will not be having a potluck.

The September meeting is the Annual Plant Exchange and remember, please, no Ostrich Fern, Houttuynia, Painter’s Pallet, Bishop’s Weed, or any other invasive plant.   The exchange is also not limited to plants.  Garden ornaments, garden tools, birdhouses, etc. are welcome.  Please bring something to put into the Exchange.

This year the Plant Exchange drawing will be drawn totally at random.    Every paid membership gets one chance in each round of the Exchange.   We will also have the $5.00 table where special plants will be placed so when your name is drawn you can choose a plant from the open exchange or you can give $5.00 to Cathy and choose a plant from the $5.00 special plant area.   Once every membership has had a turn in the first round, we will start a second round drawn at random again.   This process continues until no plants are left.

Another thing to remember is that we ask each member to stay until the end of the exchange and take any plants they brought to the exchange that were not taken during the exchange.    Every Plant Exchange there are plants left that a few of us have to load into our own vehicles and dispose of them.

I look forward to seeing you at the Suncrest Pavilion.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Our next meeting/tour will be on September 9th, 2021 from 5:00 PM until the Pavilion is cleaned up after the Plant Exchange at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer.   The address is 1455 Suncrest Drive, Lapeer, MI 48446.   The Pavilion is at the back of the Suncrest Nursing Facility.   For any that have never been to the Display Garden at Suncrest, be sure to arrive early to tour the gardens.   We will start the Plant Exchange drawing at 5:00 PM.

Name Badges- If you need one of the new EMHS name badges, please put your printed name on the sign-up sheet at any meeting or you can email Glen with your request.  Glen will try to have your name badge at the next meeting.
