Note from the President- We are beginning
to wonder if spring is ever going to settle into Mid-Michigan. We received the rains typical of spring, then
received more rains to flood any low lying areas only to be followed by
temperatures cold enough to freeze the flood water.
Last week I set up the 6x8 pop-up unheated greenhouse
that I use to protect the mail order deliveries received in early spring. I had it full of the plants purchased at
Hosta College and some deliveries from some rare plant nurseries when we got
the 22 degree night temps of last weekend.
Much to my surprise the plants inside this $100.00 plastic zip closed
greenhouse were fine. The five Hosta
“White Feather” inside the enclosure fared rather well with only two leaves
frost bitten and the Hawaiian Gingers nipped but still alive were the worst of
the damage. The other unheated
greenhouse houses the potted miniature trees and grafting rootstock where multiple
trees have been sprouting. Again, the
structure saved the tender plants inside its plastic walls.
Since nobody volunteered to be the new Vice-President of
EMHS at last month’s EMHS meeting, we will again be
seeking nominations for the Office of Vice President. Please consider volunteering for this
position. The duties of the position are
printed later in this newsletter.
The topic of this month’s meeting will be Wonderful
Woodlanders. This group of plants is a
favorite of mine and all plants pictured in this presentation are grown at Pace
Gardens. Unless you visited Pace Gardens
weekly from February to June you would never see all of these plants. So watching this presentation is a way to get
more than 3 months of flowers in one hour.
Be sure to print out the handout and bring it
to the meeting with you so you can make notes during the presentation. Another
perk of coming to this meeting is the chance of taking home one of the woodland
plants featured in the presentation, I will be donating a number of spring
ephemerals which will be given away as door prizes.
We have four new members of EMHS. Please welcome Debbie Minkler, Norma Oprea,
Cheryl Richardson, and Tammy Sherman to our group.
From the reports I receive from the blog site I can see that
more people are going to the blog to obtain information about EMHS. If you haven’t checked out the blog, please
do so at http://easternmichiganhostasociety.blogspot.com/
I hope to see you at the May 9th meeting.
Glen Pace
