Note from the President- A
big thank you goes out to Jim and Lorraine Jessop for hosting the July meeting
and for finding Steve Prince to give us “Music in the Garden”. The Native American Flute music was a
wonderful addition to the EMHS meeting and a beautiful experience! We even had one member on a cell phone
sharing the experience with a long distance family member. Jim and Lorraine, you were wonderful hosts
and your graciousness was greatly appreciated.
We only have one more month before our annual plant exchange. As always we ask you to not bring invasive
plants to the meeting as they will not be permitted into the exchange. Last year
we changed the way the plant exchange is done, but you can rest assured
that you will go home with many new plants to add to your garden. This meeting is always a blast and everybody
leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own
yard. There are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring
something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only
one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held
as we have to go fast to get finished before dark, don’t bring invasive species
to trade, don’t bring any plants with known disease or insect infestation, the
exchange is not limited to plants, be prepared to have fun, the drawing starts promptly at
6:30 and goes fast, the drawing will be extremely high speed so be ready to
jump up and pick out a plant as this drawing goes FAST! The drawing is done fast, fast, fast!! *Please put a name label in each plant
you bring to the exchange. Also, please do
not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia
(Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, etc. Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta,
companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird
houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.
We
as gardeners are always looking for something different, new, and fresh, something
that will give added interest to our own garden. This is why visiting other gardener’s works is
so exciting and stimulating. I am
looking forward to our August meeting at Diana O’Riordan’s as she is one of the
newer members of the club and we have not visited her gardens. I am sure there are a few ideas that can be adapted
for use in my gardening situations.
I
also want to thank Kathy and Mick Hodgson for making the 2014 EMHS Gift Plant possible. Hosta “Bachelor Party” is already growing
nicely for me. I have included two pictures of
my plants on the EMHS blog. Kathy
and Mick, can we look forward to another EMHS Gift Plant in 2015?
I look forward to seeing you at the August 14th
meeting at Diana O’Riordan’s in Leonard, MI.
Sincerely,
Glen
Glen
P.S. Don’t forget to bring a dish to
pass for the potluck and a chair to sit on for the meeting.
