September 2015 Newsletter

Note from the President-   Our last meeting was held at Dyane Moore’s garden in Vassar, MI.  I want to thank you Dyane for being a gracious host and for opening your beautiful gardens to our group as a meeting venue.  Dyane has an affinity for Fairy Gardens and has many of her mini gardens placed around the landscape.

Dyane’s friend Darlene was a guest at the meeting and showed us an album of her airbrush painting as well as her vehicle covered in her airbrush painting.  Darlene paints on most any surface including cloth, plastic, metal, and even skin.  You can contact Darlene at 989-798-8486 for further information. 

There are only a couple more weeks before our annual plant exchange which is on September 10^th.  If you have not already potted the plants you are planning to bring to the exchange I suggest you do it as soon as possible to give the plant some time to adjust to a pot.  As always we ask you to not bring invasive plants to the exchange/meeting as they will not be permitted into the exchange.  This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.  There are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held as we have to go fast to get finished before dark.  The exchange is not limited to plants.  *Please put a name label in each plant you bring to the exchange.  Also, please do not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia (Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, etc.  Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta, companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.

When your name is called you can choose a plant form the main group or you can chose a plant from the $5.00 table and pay Barb at the end of the Exchange. 

We are also looking forward to our October 8^th meeting which will feature Gene Bush from DePauw, IN.  Gene is a Garden Writer, Lecturer, and owned the well-known Munchkin Nursery for many years.  Gene’s talk is titled Collecting the Rare and Unusual and will be focused on plants for our zone 5b gardens.  This meeting is a shared meeting with the Saginaw Valley Hosta Society and we are expecting a large number of attendees.  For this reason we will not have our typical potluck, but will instead have cookies, finger foods, and beverages.

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be at the home of Marvin and Nancy Marttila; 1920 Callis Rd., Lapeer, MI 48446, phone 810-664-7589 on September 10^th, 2015.  Tour of the gardens and networking will start at 5:00 PM, refreshments will be served at 6:00 PM, and the plant exchange/meeting will begin at 6:45 PM.  Please bring your favorite dish to pass and don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and bug spray.

           Directions- Multiple roads remain closed in downtown Lapeer.  If you are coming from the South, East, or West be sure to take I-69 to the Lake Nepessing Road exit and follow the directions below. 
           -From I-69 take exit 153 Lake Nepessing Road and drive north on Lake Nepessing Road 1 mile to Davison Rd./W. Genesee St.  Turn right (East) at the first exit on the roundabout onto W. Genesee St.  Drive 1 mile to Millville Rd. and turn left (North).  Drive 1.5 miles to Davis Lake Road and turn right (East).  Drive 6/10ths of a mile to Callis Rd. and turn left (North) and drive 7/10^ths of a mile to the house on the right. 

            -From I-75- Take I-75 to I- 69 East.  Drive 22 miles to Exit 153 Lake Nepessing Road and then follow the directions above.
            -From Saginaw Area- take I-75 south and follow the directions above 

                                            or- take M-46 East to M-24.  Turn right (South) and drive 25.8 miles to Davis Lake Road.  Turn right (West) and drive 7/10^ths of a mile to Callis Rd.  Turn right (North) and drive 7/10^ths of a mile to the house on the right. 
            **Note- Barb Hunter lives at 316 Davis Lake Road (the 3^rd house off M-24) and will open for business (Hosta, water gardening, Koi, daylilies) at 3:00 PM for anybody that would like to come by on their way to the meeting.  When I spoke with her today she had just potted up another 40 hosta that had just arrived in the mail.  Barb will close at 4:30 so everybody can make it to the meeting on time.

Summer Meetings- Remember that our summer meetings are potluck and that we need to bring our own chairs.  The club furnishes plates, flatware, and cups, but we need to provide food and drinks.  Also, please help clean-up after the meeting.

EMHS Plant Sale- EMHS still has Sempervivum plants (Hens and Chicks) in 8 different varieties.  These plants will be available at the price of 2 for $5.00.  You can see Gene Arms for further details.

Name Badges- If you need one of the new EMHS name badges, please put your printed name on the sign-up sheet at any meeting or you can email Glen with your request.  Glen will try to have your name badge at the next meeting.  

The EMHS T-shirts featuring Joseph Tychonievich's Hosta Addiction self-test are $18.00 each.  Sizes available are XXL and XXXL.  

The proceeds from the sale of this shirt go to promote our “Purpose” which is, to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.

August 13, 2015 Meeting Minutes

The Meeting – was held at the home of Dyane Moore

Networking – 5:00 PM, setup refreshments, sign in and stroll through Dyane’s gardens.

Potluck – the meeting was called to order by President Glen Pace at 6:00 PM, everyone enjoyed a wonderful potluck dinner.

Business Meeting – meeting was called back to order by President Glen Pace at 6:48 PM, visitors were introduced.

Approval of Minutes (July 9, 2015) – There were no corrections to the minutes from the July 9, 2015 meeting.  Motion to accept the minutes was made by Don Mosher and it was seconded by Steve Balabon.  Membership voted to accept the July’s meeting minutes.

Treasurer’s report – Barb Hunter, treasurer, had three reports –May, June, & July.

May’s beginning balance was $xxx.xx with total income for the month of $xxx.xx and total expenditures of $xxx.xx leaving us with an ending balance of $xxx.xx.  Motion to accept May’s treasure report was made by Cathy Hodgson with a second by Linda Pollard.  Membership voted to accept May’s treasure report.

June’s beginning balance was $xxx.xx with total income for the month of $xxx.xx and no expenditures leaving us with an ending balance of $xxx.xx.  Motion to accept June’s treasure report was made by Don Mosher and seconded by Steve Balabon.  Membership voted to accept June’s treasure report.

July’s beginning balance was $xxx.xx with total income of $xxx.xx and total expenditures of $xxx.xx leaving us with an ending balance of $xxx.xx.  Deb Brown had a question as to why we had paid almost $xxx in plants with no showing income.  President Glen Pace and Treasurer Barb Hunter explained that money had been received in February of 2015 when the club held the plant sale but the bill for the sale had just been paid.  Motion to accept July’s treasure report was made by Don Mosher and seconded by Deb Brown.  Membership voted to accept July’s treasure report.

Calendar of Events – Glen Pace went over the upcoming meetings. Noting that our October meeting we will be sharing with Saginaw Valley Hosta Society and we will only be having cookies and finger foods because of the large crowd expected that night. The board also decided not to open it up to the public.

T-Shirts –EMHS/Hosta Addiction t-shirts are still available.  $18.00 each 2x and 3x only available.

Name Badges –sign sheet if you need one.

Succulents – The club still has succulents available; see Cathy Hodgson or Gene Arms if interested in purchasing.

New business - First Blush is still available for sale ($75.00), if it is not sold by the September meeting the club will raffle it off.  Anyone interested in the raffle is asked to bring $5.00 bill, write your name on it.  If we do not receive $75.00 for the raffle those that put in $5.00 will receive their money back.  The club MUST have at least $75.00 for this because that is the price the club paid for it. 

Raffle – Our raffle brought in $xxx.xx. Thank you to Gene Arms, Jan Geisken, Cathy & Mick Hodgson, Teresa Dillon, Glen Pace and Land of the Giant Hostas for their donations.  Also thanks to Joy Boots, Glen Pace, Mark & Becky Hanner, Dyane Moore, Betty Stange, Mick & Cathy Hodgson and Darlene Nadane for their donations for our door prizes.

Next meeting – September 10^th, 2015 at the home of Nancy and Marvin Marttila in Lapeer.  This is also our annual plant exchange.

Adjourned – Cathy Myers made a motion for the meeting to be adjourned it was seconded by Mick Hodgson. The meeting was adjourned at 7:26 PM.

August 2015 Newsletter

Note from the President-   I want to thank Melva Bond for hosting the July meeting.  Melva’s yard and gardens are beautiful and gave us some inspiration for our own gardens.  The key to Melva’s well grown plants is her adding natural products (leaves, shredded paper, etc.) to the soil every year and over time this has created a deep layer of compost in which the plants thrive.   Then Melva’s unique garden art accents the gardens.  Simply beautiful!

            -From I-75- Take the Birch Run exit and drive east on Birch Run Rd to M-15.  Turn left (North) and drive to the traffic light in downtown Millington, then follow the above directions.
            -From Saginaw Area- take M-46 east to M-15 and turn right (South).  Drive approximately 5 miles staying on M-15 in Vassar and turn left (East) onto Butler St.  Turn left (North) at the first street which is South East St, house is on left.

July 09, 2015 Meeting Minutes

Approval of Minutes (May, 2015) – There were no corrections to the minutes from the May 14, 2015 meeting.  Motion to accept the minutes were made by Elaine Rappley and it was seconded by Becky Hanner.  Membership voted to accept May’s meeting minutes.

Treasurer’r report – Barb Hunter, treasurer, did not have a treasurer’s report to give. She will provide both at the August meeting.

Membership dues – Marlene Daniels, secretary reminded members that dues need to be paid ASAP. If questionable whether or not you had paid she suggested seeing her after meeting.

MHS Garden Walk – Glen Pace thanked everyone who helped in the planning, cleaning of gardens, and working the day of the tour and also to those who provided cookies to the sites.  We received wonderful feedback regarding the tour.  Thanks again to all who helped us out to make it a huge success.

T-Shirts – EMHS/Hosta Addiction, are still available.  See Glen for information.

Name Badges –sign sheet if you need one. First one free and replacements are $2.00 each.  Several new tags were available for pick up at the meeting.

New business – no new business, and there were no other announcements for this meeting.

Raffle – brought in $116.00 Thank you to Maria Rowland, Jan Geisken, Gene Arms for bringing items for the raffle.  Thank you Glen Pace as well as Mark & Becky Hanner for your generous donations of plants for our door prizes.

Next Meeting – is August 13, 2015 at Dyane Moore’s home in Vassar.
