Note from the President-
Summer has come to mid-Michigan the week after winter was gone. Most of us are already experiencing drought
conditions and having to water our gardens.
Something I found interesting is that the long winter had almost no
effect on most of the marginally hardy plants I grow, but some of the Hosta are
just now beginning to emerge from dormancy.
I also totally lost a few things that are considered totally hardy for
us in USDA zone 5b. If you experienced
unusual activity in your garden this past winter share your experience so maybe
we can all learn from each other.
A big thank
you goes out to Aaron Strouse for his presentation on Michigan Waterfalls at
our April 12th meeting.
Aaron’s presentations are so well received that we have already asked
him to be the speaker for the February 14th, 2019 meeting. All of the photos from Aaron’s presentations
are available for purchase. I have
posted some of Aaron’s photos to the EMHS blog so you can see examples of what
he has available. You can contact Aaron
at grchenir@icloud.com
for more information about purchasing his photographs.
Another big
thank you goes out to Mark and Becky Hanner for hosting the Pinch Pot clay
project on May 10th and 12th. Thirty-four members attended one of the
classes and made their own pot, cup, bowl, or whatever else they wanted to
make. Mark and Becky will have the
finished products at the June 14th meeting for the members to
pick-up. If you are interested in
taking one of Mark and Becky’s pottery classes you can contact them at MHanner@aol.com
for more information.
Our meeting
this month will be the first outdoor meeting of the season. Cathy Clark from Imlay City is hosting the meeting
on June 14th. I am excited
to see Cathy’s gardens because I have been President of EMHS since 2009 and
have not been to Cathy’s to see what she is growing. Cathy has attended Hosta College for years
and also supports the EMHS Annual Plant sale by buying at least one of every
plant available. She has been a big
supporter of EMHS and now she is sharing her gardens with us. Thank you, Cathy, for hosting the June 14th
meeting.
EMHS has
plants available for purchase. Please
bring money or your checkbook to the June 14th meeting so you can
purchase the plants the Fund-Raising Committee has chosen for this year’s EMHS
Fund-Raiser. More information is
available below and in the flyers attached to this newsletter.
See you at
the June 14th meeting and don’t forget to bring your own lawn
chair. Glen Pace

Next
Meeting- on June 14, 2018 at the home of Cathy Clark,
2603 N. Van Dyke Road, Imlay City, MI 48444.
The phone number if you need to call on the way to the meeting 810-614-1098.
This is the first outdoor meeting of
2018, so I will list a few reminders.
1) The summer meetings are potluck meetings so bring
your favorite dish to pass. The club
provides the plates and flatware. 2) Please bring your own chair to sit on. Don’t expect the host to have extra chairs for you to use.
3) Bring your own bug spray. It is summer and the mosquitos and flies are out, so you may want to protect yourself.
4) Please help clean-up when it is time to leave. The host has enough to do without having to clean up after everybody.
5) Please leave when the meeting is over as the host needs time to relax after hosting a meeting. Some hosts are first shift workers and may have to be up early the next morning. So please do not hang around the host’s garden after the meeting.
