Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
February 2023 Newsletter
Next Meeting is on February
9th, 2023
Note from the President- We have not
experienced enough winter to even hope that we will not get more snow and most
likely in significant amounts. So far
this winter I have only had to shovel off the greenhouse roof one time. That is a job that is usually done 10-12
times each winter. Unless you are a
Michigan snow lover, chances are that you are enjoying the lack of snow. The lack of snow and our typical hard
freezes also has its consequences. The
lack of snow allows our plants to be subjected to the cold without the
insulative properties of snow pack, the plants tend to heave from the ground
and the chance of freeze damage to their crowns and growth tips is increased,
and plants tend to be more subjected to foraging damage by four legged
creatures when there is no snow cover. Another advantage to our typical winter is
that the extreme cold temperatures will kill off damaging insects. Let’s just hope that we don’t see winter
arrive in March, April, and May.
Hosta College is In-Person
this year. The dates are March 17th
and 18th. It will be at the
regular place in Piqua, OH. More about
Hosta College is contained in the flyer copied and pasted to the last page of
this Newsletter. Most of the EMHS members that are attending
are staying at the Comfort Inn in Piqua.
It is within about two miles of the Upper Valley Career Center
venue.
Our meetings are open
to anyone interested and everybody is welcome to visit a meeting before they
join EMHS. Please feel free to invite
your friends to join us for any of our meetings. Our indoor meetings this year are going to be
back to our normal Potluck Feasts that EMHS is so known to provide. Please remember to bring your favorite dish
to pass.
Our February Meeting
will be on February 9th at the Mayfield Twp. Hall. Our speaker is Melvyn Corner of Horizon
Plants LLC in Lapeer, MI. You can read
Melvyn’s Bio under the “Next Meeting” heading of this Newsletter. If you have any interest in propagating any
type of woody plant in your garden, this is a “Don’t Miss” meeting for sure!
We need volunteers to
host a garden tour for the months of June (in the Oxford area) and for the
month of August (in the Davison area).
We have one garden host in each of these areas, but would like to get at
least one more for each. Please contact
me if you are willing to share your garden with us.
I hope to see you all
at the February 9th meeting featuring our speaker, Melvyn Corner.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Melvyn’s Bio copied from his
website:
Owner
Manager, Melvyn Corner, is a UK trained horticulturist. He began his
horticultural training by attending a local community college studying part
time and working part time at a local garden center. He then went on to study
full time at Hadlow College of Horticulture, Kent, England where he obtained a
National Certificate in Horticulture. After an 18 month internship in America,
Melvyn returned to England to study full time at Warwickshire College of
Horticulture, Warwickshire, and obtained an Advanced National Certificate of
Horticulture.
Melvyn has experience at large nurseries producing both container
shrubs and field grown stock. On the container production side, he has been
responsible for propagating and growing on throughout the whole production
cycle, from liner to finished plant. On the field grown side, he has been
involved in the production of trees/conifers, chip budding/grafting and
lifting.
In 2001 Melvyn started a propagation and liner nursery business in
Cheshire, England, suppling to local nurseries. In 2006, Melvyn immigrated to
Michigan and worked for a liner producer.
He left to start his own business, Horizon Plants LLC in 2011,
propagating and growing liners for further growing on. He started with one
greenhouse with about 1000 square feet and year by year has increased his
production area. Expanding the range of plants from just flowering shrubs, then
adding climbing plants, conifers and more recently grafted plants. Always
innovating and expanding. Melvyn still finds time to keep up with his hobbies,
camping, kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing, swimming and enjoying the outdoor
life. He also raises meat chickens and enjoys seasonal acting.
