EMHS May 2023 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
May 2023 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on May 11th, 2023

Note from the President- Our April meeting hands-on Grafting Session was a big success and I want to thank all the people that helped with the set-up and with grafting kit dispersal as well as those that stayed after the meeting to help clean up.   Since there are so many, I will not name you all individually, but please know that I greatly appreciate each and every one of you for your going above and beyond to make the meeting the success it was.

Those that participated in the grafting should start looking at the scion for signs of growth.   I had a member email me yesterday and send a picture because their scion is pushing growth which is an indicator that the graft is taking.

The May meeting is going to be a Potluck and Brainstorming meeting.   We will be asking you, the membership what you want the club to be, do, and what programs and/or speakers you would like to suggest the club try to obtain for future meetings.   Our indoor meetings are when the speakers are scheduled so we have computer program capabilities.

We will be starting the summer garden tours next month.   These tours are open to our membership as well as the public, so feel free to bring a friend with you as you tour the gardens.   By opening our tours to the public, we are fulfilling our club’s Purpose: to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.

Extending the invitation for the grafting class caused EMHS to gain four new members.   Please welcome, Cheryl & Ed Borkowski, Joanne Gensel, Rodney Laurin, and Sue Matlock.

We will have a raffle of plants donated to EMHS at the May meeting.   If you have a plant or garden item to donate to the raffle, just bring it to the meeting and we will place them on a table at the front of the room.   Tickets will be sold before the meeting and during the break and the drawing will be held before we are dismissed.

Please check the directory attached for accuracy of your own information.

We look forward to seeing you on May 11th!
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

EMHS March/April 2023 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
March & April 2023 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on April 13th, 2023

Note from the President- There is no March meeting because of Hosta College.

Our April meeting will be a hands-on Japanese Maple grafting class.   To reserve your rootstock to graft that night, email me at PaceGardens@charter.net .  Because this class takes time for everybody to complete their grafting, we will be starting one hour earlier than normal.   There will still be a potluck before the presentation so be sure to bring a dish to pass.   All persons are welcome to attend the meeting even if they are not going to graft a tree.  Please check out the times below, under the heading of “Next Meeting”.

Winter has decided it was going to come with multiple snow and ice storms during February and March.   Here at Pace Gardens I have had Eranthis and Galanthus in bloom since February 10th and they have been covered by snow and ice four times and tonight’s forecast is for another 4-6 inches of snow.   These plants have endured a lot of abuse by Mother Nature and they just keep showing their resilience by their blooms being unscathed as soon as the snow melts off of them yet again.   Another noteworthy plant that has endured these storms is the Hamamelis or Witch Hazels.   The Arnold’s Promise Witch Hazel has been in full blooms since the middle of February and although its blooms have been covered in ice multiple times, they remain perfect when the ice melts away.

Back to the grafting class for the April meeting.  The Mayfield Twp. Hall doors will open at 4:00 PM for Networking and this is when you will pay for and pick up your tree as well as sign the Release of Responsibility sheet.   Participants will be working with a very sharp knife and must take care not to injure themselves or others.   The cost of each kit is $10 for EMHS Members and $15 for non-members.   The kit will include everything needed for you to walk out of the meeting with a newly grafted Japanese Maple.   I will be providing 5 or 6 different varieties of scion wood for the attendees to choose from to graft onto the rootstock.  There will be a presentation of “The 12 Steps to Side-Veneer Grafting” before the hands-on portion begins and all persons wanting to graft will have to be present for the presentation to do the grafting.

I have opened up the grafting session to other clubs so their members can join us to learn how to graft and enjoy our meeting.   Since there are only 60 rootstock trees available, I am taking reservations for the rootstock.  If you want to participate in the grafting you have to reserve your rootstock by emailing me at PaceGardens@charter.net .    Be sure to let me know how many trees you want to graft.

We look forward to seeing you on April 13th!
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- will be held on April 13th, 2023 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

Subject: Presentation of “The 12 Steps to Side-Veneer Grafting”.   Following the presentation will be a hands-on grafting session.   The kits for grafting must be reserved as there are only 60 rootstock available.   To reserve your kit please email Glen at PaceGardens@charter.net .  If you wish to graft more than one tree, just state such in your email to Glen.  Kits are available on a first come first served basis.  As of the writing of this Newsletter, 4 kits have already been spoken for.   Each kit will include one rootstock tree of Acer palmatum rubrum, one breakaway knife, one grafting band, one grafting bag, one bag tie.  Scion wood will be available in 5 or 6 varieties for you to choose from.   You will be able to leave the meeting with a newly grafted Japanese Maple.

The doors will open at 4:00 PM for you to sign the Release of Responsibility, pay for you kit or kits, and pick-up your kit(s).  Then you can talk with others until the meeting starts.   The scion wood will be left in the bags until after the presentation so they will not dry before the grafting begins.

Time schedule
4:00 PM- Networking paying for and picking up your grafting kit
5:00 PM- Potluck
6:00 PM- Presentation and hands-on grafting class

February 2023 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
February 2023 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on February 9th, 2023

Note from the President- We have not experienced enough winter to even hope that we will not get more snow and most likely in significant amounts.   So far this winter I have only had to shovel off the greenhouse roof one time.   That is a job that is usually done 10-12 times each winter.    Unless you are a Michigan snow lover, chances are that you are enjoying the lack of snow.   The lack of snow and our typical hard freezes also has its consequences.   The lack of snow allows our plants to be subjected to the cold without the insulative properties of snow pack, the plants tend to heave from the ground and the chance of freeze damage to their crowns and growth tips is increased, and plants tend to be more subjected to foraging damage by four legged creatures when there is no snow cover.     Another advantage to our typical winter is that the extreme cold temperatures will kill off damaging insects.   Let’s just hope that we don’t see winter arrive in March, April, and May.

Hosta College is In-Person this year.   The dates are March 17th and 18th.   It will be at the regular place in Piqua, OH.   More about Hosta College is contained in the flyer copied and pasted to the last page of this Newsletter.   Most of the EMHS members that are attending are staying at the Comfort Inn in Piqua.   It is within about two miles of the Upper Valley Career Center venue.

Our meetings are open to anyone interested and everybody is welcome to visit a meeting before they join EMHS.   Please feel free to invite your friends to join us for any of our meetings.  Our indoor meetings this year are going to be back to our normal Potluck Feasts that EMHS is so known to provide.   Please remember to bring your favorite dish to pass.

Our February Meeting will be on February 9th at the Mayfield Twp. Hall.   Our speaker is Melvyn Corner of Horizon Plants LLC in Lapeer, MI.   You can read Melvyn’s Bio under the “Next Meeting” heading of this Newsletter.   If you have any interest in propagating any type of woody plant in your garden, this is a “Don’t Miss” meeting for sure!

We need volunteers to host a garden tour for the months of June (in the Oxford area) and for the month of August (in the Davison area).   We have one garden host in each of these areas, but would like to get at least one more for each.   Please contact me if you are willing to share your garden with us.

I hope to see you all at the February 9th meeting featuring our speaker, Melvyn Corner.
Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- will be held on February 9th, 2023 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

The doors will open at 5:00 PM for Networking, Potluck at 6:00 PM, Program at 7:00 PM.

Our speaker will be Melvyn Corner of Horizon Plants who will present Softwood and Hardwood Propagation.

Melvyn’s Bio copied from his website:
Owner Manager, Melvyn Corner, is a UK trained horticulturist. He began his horticultural training by attending a local community college studying part time and working part time at a local garden center. He then went on to study full time at Hadlow College of Horticulture, Kent, England where he obtained a National Certificate in Horticulture. After an 18 month internship in America, Melvyn returned to England to study full time at Warwickshire College of Horticulture, Warwickshire, and obtained an Advanced National Certificate of Horticulture.

Melvyn has experience at large nurseries producing both container shrubs and field grown stock. On the container production side, he has been responsible for propagating and growing on throughout the whole production cycle, from liner to finished plant. On the field grown side, he has been involved in the production of trees/conifers, chip budding/grafting and lifting.

In 2001 Melvyn started a propagation and liner nursery business in Cheshire, England, suppling to local nurseries. In 2006, Melvyn immigrated to Michigan and worked for a liner producer.

He left to start his own business, Horizon Plants LLC in 2011, propagating and growing liners for further growing on. He started with one greenhouse with about 1000 square feet and year by year has increased his production area. Expanding the range of plants from just flowering shrubs, then adding climbing plants, conifers and more recently grafted plants. Always innovating and expanding. Melvyn still finds time to keep up with his hobbies, camping, kayaking, biking, hiking, fishing, swimming and enjoying the outdoor life. He also raises meat chickens and enjoys seasonal acting.
