February 2013 Newsletter

Note from the President- Another year has passed and now we must look forward.  EMHS has another year of programs and events already planned or in the planning stages.  Another bus trip to find more plants for your gardens, new speakers, new program topics, and new members gardens to see are just some of the things to look forward to this year.
As always we will begin the year with Jan Everson’s presentation of last year’s AHS Convention and Garden Tour.  Jan’s program is always a great way to start the new season of Hosta growing by giving ideas of what you can look for to add to your own garden, ideas of what you can change to enhance your own gardens, or maybe persuading somebody to attend the current year’s convention by showing all the fun a convention can be.
 Mick and Cathy Hodgson have already unveiled the 2013 EMHS Hosta Stone at last year’s Christmas Party.  If you haven’t already ordered your stone featuring "Indiana Bob" Balitewicz’s H. Krugerrand, you should contact the Hodgson’s.  The public unveiling of this year’s stone will be at Hosta College on March 15th and 16th.  As always we need members to volunteer to help transport the stones to Piqua, OH.  If you are able to help with this project, please contact Mick and Cathy at 810-664-8985.
I spoke with Attorney Jim Meyer this morning.  Jim has all of the paperwork he needs to complete the application process for the 501c3 status we are seeking for EMHS.  Jim stated he would update me as to the status of the process in a week.
Review the attachments about the Nematode Project, we will vote on this at the Feb meeting.
Sincerely,
Glen

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on February 14th at 6:00 PM at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).
Our speaker for this meeting will be Jan Everson who will present her annual program on the AHS Convention and Garden Tour.  Jan makes this program every year after attending the AHS Convention so that those not able to attend the Convention and Garden Tour can still enjoy a mini tour of the events.  Be sure to bring a notepad as you will see pictures of plants that you want to find for your own garden.

Seeking Nominations for Officer Position- Carolyn Pickard has decided to not seek re-election as Vice President for the 2013-2015 term.  Due to this we are seeking nominations for a new Vice-President.  Nominations will be accepted at the February meeting.  The duties of the position are;
Vice President- Assumes the duties of President when the President is absent.  Co-signatory on EMHS checking account, helps set-up hall for meetings, sends thank you notes to speakers or hosts for current meeting.
If you are interested in helping our club in this capacity please talk with Glen, Mark, Marlene, or Barb.

Those members that had attended 6-7 meetings would be drawn in the second round. The third round of drawing would consist of those that attended 4-5 meetings. Fourth round would be those that attended 2-3 meetings and those that were attending their first meeting would be drawn last.
