April 2014 Newsletter

Note from the President- Another winter is coming to an end, finally, and now we have to think about cleaning up the gardens.  Cleaning up from the ice storms of this winter removing dead and damaged plant material, adding mulch to areas where the mulch has broken down, fertilizing, weeding, and finding new areas to plant the things we ordered over the winter are but a few of the things we have facing us over the next few months.

A good place to order plants is from the Annual EMHS Plant Sale.  There will be a board at the April meeting with pictures and descriptions of this year’s offerings.  We have not met the minimum number of plants for our club order so any plants that interest you, please order them from Glen as soon as possible.

Other places to find new plants and garden accessories are our own EMHS members.  There is a list later in this newsletter of the members that sell plants and garden accessories.  Please call to set an appointment before planning to visit any of these members.

EMHS has another year of programs and events already planned or in the planning stages.  A group trip to find more plants for your gardens (Arrowhead Alpines and Gee Farms on May 21st), new speakers, new program topics, and new member’s gardens to see are just some of the things to look forward to this year.

Joseph Tychonievich will be our speaker on May 1st.  I am mentioning this because Joseph will be bringing plants to sell and the plants Joseph brings to sell at our meeting are not common plants.  Plan to bring some extra money to buy new stuff for your gardens.

The EMHS T-shirts featuring Joseph Tychonievich’s Hosta Addiction saying are available by contacting Glen.  More information is contained below in this newsletter.

Hosta “Joy Ride”, the plant featured on our 2014 EMHS Hosta Stone, is available for purchase at the price of $10.00 each.  Contact Glen to reserve your plant/plants.

Lastly, we need of members to volunteer to host the June and July Garden Tour Meetings.  If you have never hosted a meeting, this is your chance to show off what you have done in your yard.

Sincerely,
Glen

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on April 10th at 6:00 PM at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

Our speaker for this meeting will be our President, Glen Pace who will give a PowerPoint presentation on “What is Hosta College?”.  This program will give an overview of what happens at Hosta College held in Piqua, Ohio every March; what classes are offered at Hosta College, what the Vending area looks like, and a view of the camaraderie that happens at the hotels after hours.

The new EMHS T-shirt featuring Joseph Tychonievich's  Hosta Addiction self-test are available by contacting EMHS President Glen Pace at pacegardens@charter.net or by calling Glen at  989-244-4029.

The cost of the shirt is $18.00 each for an EMHS Member and $20.00 each for a non-member.  Sizes available are S, M, L, XL, XXL and XXXL.  Priority Mail shipping is available at an additional $6.00. Joseph Tychonievich's Hosta Addiction Self-Test saying is printed on the back of the shirt.

The proceeds from the sale of this shirt go to promote our “Purpose” which is, to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.

Hosta Stones- The hybridizer for 2014 is Hans Hansen and the plant is Hosta “Joy Ride”.  H. “Joy Ride” was introduced by Walter’s Gardens.  It forms a wriggly, broadly mounding mass of very wavy blue-green leaves accented with upright folded edges, grows to 16 x 36, and has 24 inch scapes of widely flared, tubular, light lavender flowers produced in midsummer.   The Hodgson’s have 4 Natural and 1 Moss Stone for immediate sale, if interested please call Cathy at 1-810-664-8985.
Also available are 2 Brown, 1 Moss, and 3 Iron 2012 Hosta Stones featuring Ron Livingston’s H. “Alakazaam”.  The sale price is $30.00 for each stone.  We also have two 2011 Stones featuring Van Wade’s H. “American Halo”, natural color at $25.00 each.  Lastly, there is one 2008 stone featuring Joshua’s Banner hybridized by Gil Jones, natural in color at $25.00.  All of the aforementioned stones are for sale on a first come first served basis.  If interested in purchasing any of these stones at the sale prices listed please call Cathy Hodgson at 810-664-8985.

Review the last meeting minutes on the blog.  We will vote to accept the minutes as written at the next meeting.

Need a Host- We need a member to host the June 12th and July 10th meetings.  Please let Glen know if you are willing to host either of these meetings.  The summer Member Garden Tour meetings are a way for the membership to visit member’s gardens and learn from each other as well as for members to show their skills and various techniques of gardening.
