Dear EMHS Members and Friends,

The EMHS Christmas Party will be on December 13th at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).  The time-line for the evening is as follows;

5:00 PM- Open doors to Hall for Decorating
6:00 PM-
Networking, set-up refreshments,
Sign-in
6:30 PM-
Welcome and Introduce Visitors
Dinner Served
7:15 PM- Business Meeting

7:45 PM- Gift Exchange

This annual event is always a lot of fun and a great way to end the year for the club.  The Club will provide the meat (ham) and table set-ups.  We do ask that everybody bring a dish to pass as this is our biggest potluck of the year.

We will be doing the gift exchange as we have done in the past.  If you are interested in exchanging gifts, all you have to do is bring a wrapped non-gender-specific gift with a value of $10.  All the gifts will be laid on a table in the room and during the party we will call names from the sign-up sheet of the people who brought gifts.  When your name is called you go pick out a gift.  Nobody is required to bring a gift for the exchange, but if you do not bring one please understand that you will not be able to place your name on the list to pick one out.  This is the only way to assure that all people who bring a gift will receive one.

 So everybody can mark their 2019 calendars with the 2019 EMHS dates, I am including the following:

September 2018 Newsletter

Note from the President- There is only a few weeks before our Annual Plant Exchange which is on September 13th.  If you have not already potted the plants you are planning to bring to the exchange I suggest you do it as soon as possible to give the plant some time to adjust to a pot.  This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.
There are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held as we have to go fast to get finished before dark.  Also, please do not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia (Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, Persicaria (Painter’s Palette), etc.  Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta, companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.   *Please put a name label in each plant you bring to the exchange (It is nice know what a plant is when you plant it in your garden).

The Plant Exchange drawing is decided by the number of meetings each membership has attended in the past year, starting with the Sept 2017 meeting and ending with the August 9, 2018 meeting.  The first set of names will be those that have attended all eight meetings.  Next will be those members that attended seven of eight meetings, and so on.  When your name is called you can choose a plant from the main group or you can choose a plant from the $5.00 table, give Cathy your name so she can keep track of your total, then pay Cathy at the end of the Exchange.
The September Meeting/Annual Plant Exchange will be held at the home of Patrick and Patricia Major, 10491 Horton Road, Goodrich, MI 48438, phone 810-444-9814.  Don’t forget to bring your favorite dish to pass for the potluck, a chair to sit in, and at least one thing for the Plant Exchange as well as money to use at the $5.00 table.

I will start the business portion of the meeting while the potluck is underway to try and keep us from running the exchange after twilight.   Once we start the exchange the name drawing will go quickly so please take a look at the plants in the exchange before your name is called.
See you at the September 13th, 2018 Annual Plant Exchange/meeting,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

August 2018 Newsletter

Note from the President- I am told that Lapeer area got a lot of rain over a two-day period last week.   How I wish we had gotten that rain in Northern Genesee County.   My gardens are in a state of drought and if it weren’t for the hoses running daily there would be even more plants going dormant earlier than normal.   The seed set on the Trilliums this year is severely diminished because of the lack of rain and many of the Asian plants I grow are not going to bloom like they would normally.   Needless to say, I am hoping for rain.
Just a reminder; you can bring plants or garden related items to donate to the door prize and raffle drawings and you the donor gets to decide which drawing you want them in.   We all love to win something and the more that is donated, the more chance there is to win.

Thank you, Dyane Moore, for being a wonderful host for our July meeting.   Your colorful, whimsical, gardening style is a delight to encounter.   From the pictures posted on the EMHS website everybody can tell that color is important in your gardening scheme.  Sharing your gardens was very much appreciated by the entire group.
Our next meeting is on August 9th, 2018 at the home of Sandy Vukonich, 2961 Secluded Pines Dr. Oxford, MI 48371.  The phone number is 248-302-4700 in case you need to call for directions on your way to the meeting.

The EMHS Annual Plant Exchange is on September 13th, 2018.   If you have not already potted the plants you are planning on bringing to the exchange, you should do so very soon.   Plants that are dug and potted just before the meeting do not have time to adjust to the shock of transplanting and therefore look poor for the exchange.   Take the time to pot them now to give them time to adjust to the pot and look great for the Plant Exchange.   Please do not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia (Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, etc. to the exchange.   Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta, companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.

See you at the August 9th meeting and don’t forget to bring your own lawn chair.
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- on August 9, 2018 at the home of Sandy Vukonich, 2961 Secluded Pines Dr. Oxford, MI 48371.  The phone number is 248-302-4700 in case you need to call for directions on your way to the meeting.

Summer Meetings- Reminders about the summer meetings;
1) The summer meetings are potluck meetings so bring your favorite dish to pass.  The club provides the plates and flatware.
2) Please bring your own chair to sit on.   Most hosts don’t have extra chairs for you to use.
3) Bring your own bug spray.   It is summer and the mosquitos and flies are out, so you may want to protect yourself.
4) Please help clean-up when it is time to leave.   The host has enough to do without having to clean up after everybody, please pitch-in and help.
5) Please leave when the meeting is over as the host needs time to relax after hosting a meeting.   Some hosts are first shift workers and may have to be up early the next morning.   So please do not hang around the host’s garden after the meeting.
