February 2018 Newsletter

Note from the President-  Welcome to a new year of EMHS activities.   As we do every year, our summer meetings will be tours of our own member’s gardens.   As of this Newsletter only the July 12th meeting date has been taken.   If you are willing to host one of the summer meetings at your gardens, please notify any EMHS Board member so we can reserve the date you choose.    The September meeting is our Annual Plant Exchange and the person hosting this meeting should have a yard large enough to support a compliment of members, potluck tables, and a large number of plants donated for the exchange.  The June and August meeting places do not need to be as large.

The EMHS Board decided last November to have EMHS pay for the registration for Hosta College 2018 for six EMHS members in good standing.   This drawing was done this week and the winners were announced.   We have a great time at Hosta College and look forward to sharing the Hosta College experience with members of EMHS as well as catching up with friends from other states that we only get to see at Hosta College.

I am trying to secure another Aaron Strouse presentation for this spring.   His presentation last year was so well received that getting him to come again would be a great addition to the educational programs for the year.

A program that had to be cancelled last year was the pottery session at the Hanner’s studio.   This project is being planned for this year.  To make the classes smaller Mark and Becky are planning two days of classes with set times for signing-up.   The sign-up will be done ahead of time, just keep a check on the Calendar of Events to see the dates as they are announced.

Spring is still a few months away but this is the perfect time to look through nursery catalogs to find the newest additions to the gardener’s availability list.   I have ordered from a number of nurseries already to add some more oddities and rare plant material to Pace Gardens.   One thing to keep in mind is that if you see something you want, get it when you see it because the new plants sell out quickly and if you wait to purchase it later you are very likely to miss out on getting it this season.    Most of the on-line catalogs tell you the stock status as you go through the listings so you don’t pay for a plant only to find out when you receive your order that something was sold out and you get a refund for the out-of-stock plants.

Our February 8th speaker will be Melvyn Corner presenting Shrub Propagation.  Melvyn is the owner and propagation master of Horizon Plants LLC Whole Sale Nursery in Lapeer, MI.   Melvin will talk about various means of propagation of woody shrubs and other garden plants.

See you at the February 8th meeting,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- on February 08, 2018 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

The speaker is Melvyn Corner of Horizon Plants LLC in Lapeer, MI.   Melvyn is a UK trained Horticulturist.   He attended Hadlow College of Horticulture in Kent England, came to the US for an 18-month internship, then returned to the UK and studied full time at Warwickshire College of Horticulture and obtained an Advanced National Certificate of Horticulture.   In 2006 Melvyn immigrated to Michigan to work at a liner propagation production facility.   Then in 2011 Melvyn left that job to start Horizon Plants LLC.

This meeting will be a great way to start our 2018 season.

December 14, 2017 Meeting Minutes

The Meeting – was held at the Mayfield Twp. Hall

Networking – 5:00 PM, set up refreshments, decorate for Christmas Party

Refreshments – the meeting was called to order at 6:30 PM by President Glen Pace.  Everyone enjoyed the lovely Christmas potluck and ham dinner.

Business Meeting – the meeting was called back to order at 7:15 PM by President Glen Pace he gave thanks to the board members, Jan and Ken Zawisa, and the membership for all the hard work that goes into making our club a success by bringing the fantastic food for the potlucks, donations to the monthly raffles and door prizes and to those that volunteered their homes and gardens for the membership to enjoy. Mark Hanner also thanked Glen Pace for his dedication to this club and for helping to make it enjoyable and educational.  Glen also asked the membership to remember the families of those that lost loved ones this year, Jan Everson and Joyce Vescio.

Summer Garden Meetings – The membership was encouraged to consider signing up to host one of the summer garden tour meetings in June, July, August, or September. The sign-up sheet will be available at all meetings until those dates are filled.

Hosta College – At the November board meeting it was decided that EMHS would give away 6 paid registrations to Hosta College March 16 & 17, 2018 (member will be responsible for their own transportation, lodging, and any additional class fees). Glen will send out an email to the membership stating the rules (member in good standing and a deadline) and request that every member interested respond to the email.  Glen will then do a random drawing of all members that responded then notify those winners.  Glen stated that he has no conflict of interest because his registration is paid because he is an instructor at Hosta College.  Depending on whether the member is also a member of MHS the member will either get $55.00 or $42.00.

Election of Officers – This year the position of  President and Treasurer are open.  Glen, opened up the floor for any nominations to take either position?  No one in the club volunteered for either position.  Glen Pace and Barb Hunter stated they would be happy to stay on in their current position.

Name Badges – Please sign the sheet if you need one, remember the first one is free and replacements are $2.00 each.  If possible please save the magnet from the back of a ruined badge to save cost.

Spring Plant sale – Cathy Hodgson presented the club with the plants that the Fundraising Committee had come up with this year.  Those plants are Hosta Half/Half, Christmas Candy, Sun Mouse and Wrinkle in Time.  Also, the club will have available Bush Clematis Violet Stardust and Hellebore Blushing Bride’s Maid. Each plant will be $10.00 and will be delivered at the April meeting.

Gift Exchange – Participation was for those that brought a gift to the exchange.

Next Meeting – February 8, 2018, at the Mayfield Twp. Hall

Adjourned – 8:20 PM

Respectfully submitted,

Marlene Daniels
Secretary
