December 2017 Newsletter

Note from the President- Hopefully all of gardens have already been prepped for the winter months we are facing.  Removing the old dead foliage from your Hosta at this time of year makes it much easier to clean the beds in spring because you don’t have to deal with the Hosta leaves and those leaves are not providing a food source for the slugs that all Hosta lovers abhor.   Another menace for the Hosta gardener is the vole which during will tunnel just under the mulch and eat the crown of the plant sometimes totally killing a plant during a single winter.   Clearing the garden will help deter these little rodents from attacking your gardens.

Winter also gives us the “down-time” from our garden chores which allows us the chance to go through plant catalogs to find new plants for our gardens.  Take the time to write down what plants you want and where you found it listed because if you don’t order it right when you see it you may forget where you found it whether it be in a catalog or in a computer search.   These lists also become a great way to cut plants from the want list because our want list is generally a lot longer than our available planting space and/or what our wallet allows.

The September 14th Annual Plant Exchange was a lot of fun with many plants to choose from for the exchange, wonderful food for the potluck, and an opportunity to visit with friends.  Thank you all for sharing!

EMHS is closing the 2017 year with the Annual Holiday Festivities and Gift Exchange on December 14th, 2017 at the Mayfield Township Hall in Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our biggest potluck of the year so please bring your favorite dish to pass and plan on having a lot of Holiday fun.  The details of the event are covered later in this newsletter.

I want to thank all of the people who donated plants, crafts, and other items to the raffle and door prize drawings.  The monthly raffle drawings are one of the fund raisers for EMHS and the door prize drawings are an added bonus for members and visitors attending the meetings.

The Fund-Raising Committee of the Mick and Cathy Hodgson and Gene Arms have done a fantastic job organizing the Annual Plant Sales and have already made the selections for the 2018 sale.  Thank you, Mick, Cathy, and Gene, for your work on this project.

EMHS Members that shared their gardens with the group for the summer meetings are the best!   We all learn something from every garden we get to visit and hosting a meeting is a great way to let our members see what you can teach the rest of us.

Next, I want to thank all of the people that brought food for the potlucks throughout the year.  One of the things EMHS is known for is the fantastic potlucks at the monthly meetings and this year was no exception.

Another thank you goes out to the EMHS Board.  This dedicated group of members continues to direct the entire group in an onward and upward fashion.  At our annual Board Meeting, we discuss the plans for the next year which takes a number of hours, but ask you, our members to share your thoughts and ideas of what you would like to see planned for future meetings of EMHS.   At every meeting, we ask if there is any other topics of discussion, this is your chance to share your ideas or you can tell any Board Member so your thoughts can be shared.

Per the EMHS by-laws 2018 is the year for elections for the Board positions of EMHS President and Treasurer.   Barb and myself have both agreed to stay on in our respective positions for the next two years but ask that anybody interested in running for the positions of President or Treasurer please notify any EMHS Board member of your interest.  Elections will take place at the May 10, 2018 meeting.

Lastly, I want to thank you, our members, for being the kind, helpful, sharing people you are toward each other and especially to our visitors.  Because of this, our club continues to grow and with that growth comes the ability to contract new speakers which in turn assists us in our “Purpose” which is, to promote the interest of hostas and shade gardening; to extend horticultural education and activities to its members and the community.

See you at the December 14th meeting,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

This annual event is always a lot of fun and a great way to end the year for the club.  The Club will provide the meat (ham) and table set-ups.  We do ask that everybody bring a dish to pass as this is our biggest potluck of the year.

We will be doing the gift exchange as we have done in the past.  If you are interested in exchanging gifts, all you have to do is bring a wrapped non-gender-specific gift with a value of $10.  All the gifts will be laid at the front of the room and during the party we will call names from the sign-up sheet of the people who brought gifts.  When your name is called you go pick out a gift.  Nobody is required to bring a gift for the exchange, but if you do not bring one please understand that you will not be able to place your name on the list to pick one out.  This is the only way to assure that all people who bring a gift will receive one.

Review the September 14th, 2017 Meeting Minutes on the blog.  We will vote to accept the minutes at the December 14, 2017 meeting.

EMHS's 2017 Winners of the American Hosta Society's President's Wall Award

Awards Presented at the 9/14/2017 EMHS Meeting

American Hosta Society’s President’s Wall Award
EMHS 2017 Award Winners

We are pleased to honor two of our members this evening.  Both have been part of our Hosta Club for many years.  They have been friends for years, and often are found working together to help with various community and garden activities in the Lapeer area over the years.

Although they were just children when Lady Bird Johnson promoted her Beautify America campaign in the 1960's, they assimilated the message, and have been active participants in several area garden groups, including Master Gardeners, and the Thumb Area Pond and Water Garden groups, as well as our own EMHS.

Recent work includes the marvelous garden over Suncrest, in Lapeer, as well as promoting fairy gardening to generate interest in a new generation of young gardeners.

When EMHS needed officers to help with the jobs of treasurer and secretary, they stepped up to the challenge, and in both critical areas made significant improvements in our club's record keeping and tracking of finances.

It gives me great pleasure to present the America Hosta Society's President's Wall Awards to Barb Hunter and Marlene Daniels.

September 2017 Newsletter

Note from the President- There is only a few weeks before our annual plant exchange which is on September 14th.  If you have not already potted the plants you are planning to bring to the exchange I suggest you do it as soon as possible to give the plant some time to adjust to a pot.  As always, we ask you to not bring invasive plants to the exchange/meeting as they will not be permitted into the exchange.

This meeting is always a blast and everybody leaves with new plants (sometimes many plants) to use in their own yard.  There are a couple of things to remember about the Plant Exchange meeting; bring something to exchange, each membership (single, couple, or family) gets only one name in the drawing canister, look things over as the drawing is being held as we have to go fast to get finished before dark.  The exchange is not limited to plants.  *Please put a name label in each plant you bring to the exchange (It is nice know what a plant is when you plant it in your garden).  Also, please do not bring any invasive species such as Lily of the Valley, Houttuynia (Chameleon plant), Ostrich Ferns, Bishops Weed, etc.  Suggestions of plants to bring are Hosta, companion plants, ornamental trees/shrubs, or garden related items such as bird houses, garden ornaments, watering wands, ornamental pots, etc.

The Plant Exchange drawing is decided by the number of meetings each membership has attended in the past year, starting with the Sept 8th 2016 meeting and ending with the August 10, 2017 meeting.  The first set of names will be those that have attended all eight meetings.  Next will be those members that attended seven of eight meetings, and so on.  When your name is called you can choose a plant from the main group or you can choose a plant from the $5.00 table, give Cathy your name so she can keep track of your total, then pay Cathy at the end of the Exchange.

One change to the Annual Plant Exchange that was decided at the Annual Board Meeting on November 10, 2016 is that the donor is the one to decide if their donation is to be placed on the $5.00 table or if it is to be placed in the main exchange.

The September Meeting/Annual Plant Exchange will be held at the home of Melva Bond in Bridgeport, MI.  Don’t forget to bring your favorite dish to pass for the potluck, a chair to sit in, and at least one thing for the Plant Exchange as well as money if you plan to use the $5.00 table as part of your Plant Exchange experience.

For the September meeting I will start the business portion of the meeting while the potluck is underway to try and keep us from running the exchange after twilight.   Once we start the Exchange the name drawing will go quickly so please take a look at the plants in the exchange before your name is called.

See you at the September 14th, 2017 Annual Plant Exchange/meeting,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

August 2017 Newsletter

Note from the President-  Unforeseen family issues changed our July meeting plans.  Mark’s dad is doing much better now and plans to return to his apartment soon.   We will try to plan the clay pinch-pot project with the Hanners for a future date.

I also want to thank Barb Hunter for offering to open her gardens on a last-minute basis for our July meeting.  Barb’s gardens are beautiful plantings with many unique sculptures.  Barb also offers many Hosta cultivars for sale as well as water plants, Koi, succulents, and several other selections.  If you didn’t take time to look at the plants Barb was selling or you saw something you wanted but didn’t buy it at the meeting, just give Barb a call and make an appointment to go for a visit.  In addition, I want to thank all the members that donated items for the door prize drawing and raffle drawings.  These donations are enjoyed by the winners and are a great way for our members to enjoy the benefits of EMHS.

The Hosta world mourns the passing of one of our members, Jan Everson.  Jan's experience with hostas runs deep, as she has developed a nice shade garden at their home in Troy, has toured many gardens on national and state hosta society tours and shared these tours with us in prior years, and has served in many different roles in the Metro Detroit Hosta Society, the Michigan Hosta Society, and the Great Lakes Hosta Society.   Most recently, Jan served as editor of the MHS newsletter, producing an award-winning print and online publication.  Jan was the speaker for our February meeting this year presenting “The Blooming Mojave Desert”.   Please keep Jan’s husband Bob and her sister Sarah in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.

Our August meeting will be at John and Annette Gavit’s in Saginaw.  If you have never been to John and Annette’s you are in for a treat of something different.  The front yard is a collection of well grown Hosta and companion plants and the back yard has the most unique pathways you will ever see.

Please remember to bring your own chair and bug spray to the summer meetings.   Also remember to bring your favorite dish to pass for the potluck.

I look forward to seeing you at John and Annette’s in Saginaw on August 10th!

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
