September 2021 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on September 9th, this is the Annual Plant Exchange

Note from the President- Last meeting we had a tour of three member’s gardens that we had never toured before.   A huge thank you goes out to Paul Laidler, Ken & Jan Zawisa, and Elin & Bob Bastianelli for sharing their wonderful gardens with us.   Paul has a fantastic collection of Hosta with one that Barb and I think he needs to get into tissue culture and a stone wall that he built himself over a ten-year period that is a sight to behold!    Ken and Jan Zawisa have a garden that is built on a hill and the gardens surround the house.   The storm that hit us the night before the tour brought down trees in their yard and took out their power, but they still shared their beautiful gardens with those of us that dared to tread the flooded roads.   Best Wishes for them to get the stairway to the deck replaced after the tree took it out.   Elin’s shade garden is built at the back of the property in the edge of the woods.  She has many plants that came from the woods she is gardening in.   The mini deer ferns she has planted along certain pathways are adorable and came from the parts of the woods she has cleared for the gardens.   Her husband Bob keeps one of the most immaculate lawns I have ever seen.  All three properties were fantastic places to visit and see just what others do to suit their own taste in shade gardening.

The EMHS Board had an email meeting after the July Tour.   The Board voted unanimously to:

1.      No longer have Potlucks for the summer garden tour meetings.

2.      Not have the Potluck for the September Plant Exchange.

3.      Continue the summer meetings as garden tours with at least two gardens in the same geographical area each month.

4.      Not have a business meeting at any tour meeting.

5.      Continue to monitor the CDC Guidelines in hopes of having the Christmas Party

We will discuss the thought processes of the Board decisions at the September Plant Exchange.   The pavilion at Suncrest in Lapeer has been secured for the September meeting.  We will also have the business portion of the meeting before the Plant Exchange begins.  For the Plant Exchange meeting we will have bottled water, Iced Tea, and if members want to bring cookies, they are welcome to do so.   We will not be having a potluck.

The September meeting is the Annual Plant Exchange and remember, please, no Ostrich Fern, Houttuynia, Painter’s Pallet, Bishop’s Weed, or any other invasive plant.   The exchange is also not limited to plants.  Garden ornaments, garden tools, birdhouses, etc. are welcome.  Please bring something to put into the Exchange.

This year the Plant Exchange drawing will be drawn totally at random.    Every paid membership gets one chance in each round of the Exchange.   We will also have the $5.00 table where special plants will be placed so when your name is drawn you can choose a plant from the open exchange or you can give $5.00 to Cathy and choose a plant from the $5.00 special plant area.   Once every membership has had a turn in the first round, we will start a second round drawn at random again.   This process continues until no plants are left.

Another thing to remember is that we ask each member to stay until the end of the exchange and take any plants they brought to the exchange that were not taken during the exchange.    Every Plant Exchange there are plants left that a few of us have to load into our own vehicles and dispose of them.

I look forward to seeing you at the Suncrest Pavilion.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

EMHS August 2021 Newsletter

Note from the President- Thank you Joyce Farrow and Sandy Vukonich for hosting the July tour.   Both gardens are fantastic and I even got to see a Hosta I had to acquire for my own garden.   Hosta “Etched Glass” in Joyce’s garden is one of those Hosta you can recognize from a distance.   When I found it at Piechnik’s Greenhouse the plants did not have the same variegation pattern, but I bought it anyway in hopes that the difference from Joyce’s plant is because of fertilization at a retail greenhouse.  A picture of Joyce’s plant is on the EMHS blog.

For August we will be having three gardens on tour. All three are gardens that we have never toured before.   The addresses and directions are listed below.   Since we have three gardens to visit, I have gotten the approval of all three hosts to extend the tour hours.   All three gardens will be open for viewing from 2PM until 7PM.   We will not be having a potluck, but cold bottled water will be offered at each of the gardens.

Again, there will be no potluck at this meeting.

It is also time to get plants potted for the Plant Exchange and remember, please, no Ostrich Fern, Houttuynia, Painter’s Pallet, Bishop’s Weed, or any other invasive plant.   The exchange is also not limited to plants.  Garden ornaments, garden tools, birdhouses, etc. are welcome.

There is no suggestion of which order to tour the sites, so I will give directions starting at Elin’s and also from starting at Paul’s.   the choice is your as to where to go and in which order you go to the sites.

I look forward to seeing you at the gardens.

Sincerely,

Glen Pace

EMHS July 2021 Newsletter

Eastern Michigan Hosta Society
July 2021 Newsletter

Next Meeting is on July 8th, 3PM-7PM

Note from the President- This Newsletter will be a short one, but I will try to make sure I include all of the up-to-date information.

First, I want to thank Barb Hunter for hoisting the June Garden Tour!   I can appreciate all the work she has put into her property and Wow, what a selection of Hosta!

I am saddened to announce that one of our long-time members, Carol Leonard from Leonard, MI died on May 28th.   Carol had a wonderful garden that she shared with us by hosting meetings at her home.   She will be sadly missed by us.

We are trying something new with our summer tour this month; we are going to have two gardens to tour.   If this event is a success, we will continue to do it for future summer garden tour gatherings.   Our hosts this month will be Joyce Farrow in Otisville and Sandy Vukonich in Oxford.   Since this event was not originally planned this way, these two gardens are a distance apart, but Joyce Farrow’s Garden is one that we have never toured before.   We are hoping to get new gardens to tour and there is less hassle for the garden owners since tables are not needed for a potluck.   Gardens located in the same area would be best for this new idea.  Please let me know if you are interested in letting us visit your garden.

At Sandy’s, please do not park in the circle driveway as that is the means for others to come and go.   Please park on the grass by the shed on the right side of the driveway.   Both gardens will be open from 3PM until 7PM.   This gives ample time to visit both sites even though they are far apart.

We will not be having a potluck, but cold bottled water will be offered at each of the gardens.

Since Covid we have not had a true business meeting.   If any member wants to see the Books for the Club, please see Barb Hunter or myself.   We are not charging dues for the Club again this year because we are not having speakers or indoor meetings.  For those that were paid ahead, your dues will be extended to reflect such.

The August tour is being hosted by Elin Bastianelli in Highland on August 12, 2021.

We are hoping that EMHS will be able to have the September Plant Exchange Meeting at the Suncrest Pavilion in Lapeer.   This decision will be made at a later date and is dependent on the opening of the pavilion for social gatherings.   The Pavillion is open to the public for gatherings, but they are not taking reservations at this time.

Directions to the tour sites are below.   I look forward to seeing you at the gardens.

Sincerely,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on July 8th, 2021 at Joyce Farrow’s in Otisville and at Sandy Vukonich’s in Oxford.   These garden tours are open to anybody interested in coming.   Please ask your friends to join you for the experience.

Directions:  Joyce Farrow, 9283 Castle Ct. Otisville, MI  48463.   The road Castle Ct. is located on the west side of M-15 just south of downtown Otisville between Dodge and Francis Roads.   I will place a tour sign at the corner of M-15 and Castle Ct and another sign at the driveway.   Turn west onto Castle Ct and drive about ½ mile to the home.

Directions:  Sandy Vukonich, 2961 Secluded Pines Dr. Oxford, MI 48371.  The phone number is 248-302-4700 in case you need to call for directions on your way to the meeting.

From Joyce Farrow’s - Turn right onto M-15 and drive to I-69.   Turn onto East I-69 and take the M-24 exit.  Turn right (South) and drive 7.7 miles to Brocker Rd.  Turn Right (West) and drive 1.3 miles to Baldwin.  Turn Left (South) and drive 0.8 miles to Secluded Pines Dr.  Turn Left (East) and drive 0.2 miles to house on right.

Both gardens will be open from 3 PM to 7 PM.

Name Badges- If you need one of the new EMHS name badges, please put your printed name on the sign-up sheet at any meeting or you can email Glen with your request.  Glen will try to have your name badge at the next meeting.
