February 2017 Newsletter

Note from the President-  It is time to think about our spring gardens; the clean-up, what to buy new as accents in the garden, and what changes we want to make in the garden.  A great place to get ideas for what can be purchased, done to change the garden, get some education, and have a great time with people who have common interests is at Hosta College in Piqua, OH on March 17th and 18th.   Hosta College is: educational, interactive, lots of fun, a great place to find what’s new for your garden, a place to buy Hosta, Companion Plants, Hosta Stones, Books, Garden Tools, Unique Art, Clothing, and where you see friends you only get to see once per year at Hosta College in Piqua, OH.   The registration fee is $42 if you are a member of Michigan Hosta Society and this entitles you to the Vendor area, book/tool sales area, the plant auction on Friday evening, and 6 classes that you choose from a class schedule posted on the Hosta College website.  One of the most fun things is going to the after-hours gatherings at each of the Hotels that people stay at.   This year the Comfort Inn in Piqua has been blocked for attendees as well as some rooms at the Piqua La Quinta.   There are also nice hotels in Troy just a few miles south of Piqua which have been very accommodating of the gatherings, letting us use their conference rooms until the wee hours of the morning.

More information about Hosta College can be found by going to https://www.ihostohio.org/glhc/

Our February meeting is going to be something totally different for us.  Jan Everson will present “The Blooming Mohave Desert”.   This presentation was created by Jan after her and husband Bob visited the Mohave on two different occasions while it was in bloom.  The pictures in Jan’s presentation are sure to be spectacular!

Please read the section in this newsletter “Proposed By-Law Change”.  We will be voting at the February 9th meeting about this proposed change.  This topic was discussed at the December 2016 meeting.   If anybody has questions regarding the proposal, please talk with any board member or you can ask at the February meeting as a discussion before the vote on the subject.

Please go to the EMHS blog at http://easternmichiganhostasociety.blogspot.com/ and read December Meeting Minutes.  These Minutes are published for the membership to review as an accurate record of our meetings.  We can all make mistakes and this is your opportunity to correct any mistakes we have made.

If any member has ideas of what topics they would like to have as a meeting presentation, please let me know.   I try to schedule presentations that will interest a variety of people, but any suggestions are welcome.

See you at the February 9th meeting,
Glen Pace
EMHS President

Next Meeting- February 9th, 2017 at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw, Lapeer, MI 48446.  This is our regular meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the driveway just north of the Cemetery).

The time schedule for the evening is;
1700-   Networking
1800-
Potluck
1900-
  Program
2000-   Business Meeting

The Program for the evening will be "The Blooming Mohave Desert" presented by Jan Everson.   This presentation was compiled after Jan and Bob Everson visited the Mohave Desert while in its blooming period.  The desert has breath-taking bloom displays after receiving perfect rain periods.  This presentation will show what Mother Nature can do to a dry parched landscape.

Review the December 8th, 2016 Meeting Minutes on the blog.  We will vote to accept the minutes at the February 9th, 2017 meeting.
