July 2013 Newsletter

Note from the President- Consistent rains this summer are having us mow the lawn weekly or even more often.  On the beneficial side of the rains is that the Hosta are happy and growing very nicely.  For the Hosta the rains also bring dreaded slug outbreaks.  Personally I would rather deal with the slugs that keep my ranch of wild chipmunks happily fed, than to drag hoses around to water the gardens.  No matter what the scourge be, drought, too much rain, tree roots, slugs, rabbits, virus X or something else we will deal with it to keep and grow our beloved Hosta.

A big thank- you goes out to Phil and Ginger Lisik for their gracious hospitality while hosting our June meeting.  The seating area was set up to facilitate comfort for the meeting as well as promote personal conversations during the refreshment period.  The turkey and pork tenderloin the Lisik’s cooked was fantastic and appreciated by all.  Hopefully everybody took time to stroll through the expansive gardens as the Lisik’s have a remarkable collection of Hosta and other plants.  Lastly, thank you Phil and Ginger for giving us the opportunity to purchase plants before the meeting.

At the June meeting all paid memberships present received a gift plant of Hosta “Sacramento”.  Any paid membership present at the July meeting that was not present at the June meeting is welcome to obtain their gift plant from Cathy Hodgson.  All extra plants of this Hosta can be purchased from the club for the nominal fee of $3.00 per plant (the wholesale price is $5.00 for each plug).

Our next meeting is at the home of Helen Wischmeyer in Vassar.  We will follow our summer time schedule of; tour the gardens from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM, Refreshments will be served 7:00 PM until 8:00 PM, the business meeting will begin at 8:00 PM.   We ask that everybody please help clean up the refreshment area.  Everybody is to respect the home owner by leaving the premises no later than 9:00 PM.

If you have not decided what plants to bring to the September Plant Exchange, now is the time to make the decision so the plants will have time to acclimate to their pot before being brought to a meeting for exchange.  Divide and transplant them now so they have a little time to fill out and look good for the exchange in September.  Remember we have changed the rules on the plant exchange and the number of meetings you have attended in the past year will determine the order of which your name is drawn, so attending the monthly meetings has a year-end benefit.  Please be mindful of what you chose to bring to the exchange; don’t bring invasive species to trade, don’t bring any plants with known disease or insect infestation, and remember the exchange is not limited to plants.

I look forward to seeing all of you at the July 11th, 2013 meeting at Helen Wischmeyer’s.
Sincerely,
Glen
