Note from the President- I got home from Hosta College yesterday
afternoon. EMHS unveiled the 2013 Hosta
Stone to the public at Hosta College and sold all but 6 of the stones
transported to Hosta College. Cathy
Hodgson will give a report of the Hosta Stone Sales at the April meeting. We also have stones available from 2008,
2011, & 2012 for anyone interested in those stones.
This month we will be
seeking nominations for the Office of Vice President. Please consider volunteering for this
position. The duties of the position are
printed later in this newsletter.
The topic of
this month’s meeting will be Cypripedium Orchids presented by me. I truly enjoy teaching people that these
natives are not as hard to grow as often thought. Just like with Rhododendrons, the key is
drainage.
I want to
send out a big thank-you to Jackie DiGiovanni of Michigan Gardening Magazine
for including EMHS’s calendar of Events in the Magazine. Jackie is including EMHS functions, Hybridizer
Group meetings, and MHS functions as long as I have a date, place, and time to
send before the deadline.
From the
reports I receive from the blog site I can see that more people are going to
the blog to obtain information about EMHS.

Next Meeting- Our next meeting will be on
April 11th at 6:00 PM at the Mayfield Twp. Hall, 1900 N. Saginaw,
Lapeer, MI 48446. This is our regular
meeting place located just south of the point of M-24 and N. Saginaw, (the
driveway just north of the Cemetery).
The doors will open at 5:00 PM.
The topic
for this meeting is Cypripedium Orchids.
This PowerPoint Presentation contains pictures of many Cypripedium
species and hybrids. You can grow
Cypripediums in your garden, come find out how easy it can be. Glen will show how to pot these orchids and
how to sink the pot into your garden to grow these beauties easily.

The EMHS Board by majority vote has authorized the
trip to be subsidized by the club so that each member attending will pay only
$25.00 (non-refundable deposit) for the trip as long as at least 30 people
reserve a spot on the bus by paying the deposit in advance.
Anybody that is not an EMHS Member can go on the bus trip by paying an
additional $5.00 ($30.00 non-refundable deposit).

Hosta Stones- The hybridizer for 2013 is "Indiana
Bob" Balitewicz and the Hosta is Krugerrand. H. Krugerrand is a large, upright mound,
thick bright gold foliage, large leaf 14 X 10 inches up to 171/2 X 131/2
inches, 17 vein pairs, ovate shape, moderately wavy. slightly corrugated, with
pale lavender flowers. The official unveiling of the 2013 Hosta
Stone was at Hosta College in Piqua, OH on March 15th, 2013.

We also have two 2011 Stones featuring Van Wade’s H. “American Halo” and one 2008 Stone featuring Gil Jones’ H. “Joshua’s Banner”. These stones are in natural color and are $30.00 each.
